VSG Altglienicke moves to Fürstenwalde: A circle is closing!
A drastic chapter begins for VSG Altglienicke: the South Berlin regional football league team is leaving its ancestral home and moving to the Friesenstadion in Fürstenwalde in Brandenburg. The move, which will be implemented on June 16, 2025, is due to Berlin's inadequate sports infrastructure. Loud Sports show After promotion to the regional league, the VSG Altglienicke stadium is missing important construction work that would make it possible to use it in its own stadium.
At 51.1 kilometers away, the new venue is not exactly around the corner, but it does offer the opportunity for VSG Altglienicke to pursue their passion. Managing director Marco Schröder has had to be patient in the past because there has been no progress with the necessary changes since the building application was submitted seven years ago.
The challenges in Berlin
Bernd Schultz, the President of the Berlin Football Association, sees the critical situation in the capital. “The cross-club requirements are increasing enormously,” said the official. There is no suitable replacement location for VSG Altglienicke in Berlin that meets the criteria of the regional league. The quality of the sports facilities is being put to the test; only the Olympic Stadium and the stadium at the Alte Försterei are suitable for the third division, which severely limits the options for the clubs.
Marco Schröder expresses his dissatisfaction with the long waiting times that affect the planning of necessary construction work. It is feared that this slowness could lead to other clubs from Berlin considering the surrounding area. For VSG Altglienicke, however, the move to Brandenburg is also associated with hopes: it is hoped that the new location will attract potential spectators from the region and get them excited about national football.
VSG Altglienicke at a glance
VSG Altglienicke has not only moved, but has also played at three different locations in the last six years. The stadium in Altglienicke, which has existed since 1890, has a capacity of 2,500 spectators and is equipped, among other things, with artificial turf. Nevertheless, the stadium remained unusable due to the lack of 300 seats and a fence for the guest area.
VSG Altglienicke achieved an average number of spectators of 599 last season and is therefore not an unknown quantity in Berlin football. With the move to Fürstenwalde, Schröder and his team see the opportunity to bring new impetus to the following not only locally but also nationally.
In Berlin, however, the signs of a turnaround are red: the Senate has reserved 24 million euros for the renovation of sports facilities, while the estimated need for renovation is over 400 million euros. The current situation raises the question of what prospects Berlin football has and how clubs will play in the capital in the future.
The construction work on the own sports field in Altglienicke could be completed by 2028. Until then, the Friesenstadion is the new home of VSG Altglienicke, which hopes for a positive future in Brandenburg.
