Diesel trains in the Prignitz Express: environmentally friendly turnaround by 2036!
Exciting developments are coming up in Neuruppin: The Prignitz-Express RE6 trains are now rolling through the region using environmentally friendly HVO fuel. Transport Minister Guido Beermann (CDU) announced that this biodiesel made from vegetable oil can emit up to 90% less CO₂ compared to conventional diesel. From 2023, this fuel will be used in diesel trains, which represents a decisive step towards environmentally conscious mobility. Nevertheless, the diesel trains are expected to remain on the tracks for over 10 years, i.e. until 2036, as maz-online.de reports.
The switch to HVO fuels that has begun is a first step in the right direction. Beermann emphasizes the urgency of a drive change in order to finally do without diesel fuels by 2037. “We have to think innovatively here,” said the minister. The trains that commute between Wittenberge, Neuruppin and Berlin-Charlottenburg could also be electrified in the future. This would be another crucial step forward for rail transport.
Neuruppin is becoming more lively
But something is not only happening with diesel trains. In Neuruppin, citizens are dissatisfied with the current situation in the city center and want more life. According to a MAZ survey, there is increasing investment in urban development funding, with a total of around 50 million euros in the last 30 years. The city would like to develop projects together with the residents in order to test innovative solutions for a lively city center.
Another reason to be happy is the upcoming construction of a new daycare center in Dabergotz, the majority of which will be prefabricated in Neuruppin. Installation of the kit is scheduled for the second week of September; the children can probably move in in late summer 2026. These positive developments are part of a comprehensive strategy for the city, which also considers the redesign of the church square.
Cultural highlights and traditions
While Neuruppin is changing, a long tradition is not being lost. The Havelberg Horse Market, which will take place from September 4th to 7th, promises to attract around 200,000 guests. This event has a history dating back to the 18th century and brings together people from across the region. New this year is the “Kaiser-Otto-Pfalz” area, where craftsman demonstrations will amaze you.
There will be a big occasion in 2031, when the 250th birthday of Karl Friedrich Schinkel will be celebrated. This opportunity will not go unused to redesign the church square and thus create a cultural center in Neuruppin.
Overall, there are forward-looking projects in both the areas of mobility and urban development that are intended to make Neuruppin more lively and sustainable. Let's stay tuned to see how the situation develops!
