Big celebration in the Coesfeld district: 50 years of municipal reorganization!
On June 17, 2025, a festive special meeting of the district council took place in the large meeting room of the Coesfeld district to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the municipal reorganization. The Coesfeld district was founded on January 1, 1975 and has undergone impressive development since then. At the meeting, numerous representatives from politics, administration and civil society looked back on the last five decades and acknowledged the importance of this milestone for the region. The event was moderated by Andreas Kramer, editor-in-chief of Radio Kiepenkerl.
District Administrator Dr. Christian Schulze Pellengahr drew a positive conclusion: “The population has grown from 161,000 to over 226,000, and the unemployment rate in North Rhine-Westphalia has reached a historic low since 2007.” He emphasized the role of the people in the district in this positive development and noted that without the commitment and community spirit of the population, these successes would not have been possible. State Secretary Daniel Sieveke built on his words and thanked Municipal Minister Ina Scharrenbach, who was ill.
A look back at the regional reform
The municipal reorganization, also known as regional reform, is an important event in the history of local politics. This reform aimed to strengthen the planning, administrative and political performance of the municipalities. It was not carried out without reason; Changes in the number of inhabitants, socio-demographics and infrastructure required an adjustment of the administrative structure in order to do justice to current living and movement areas. A project as comprehensive as the regional reform of 1975 has also left its mark in other regions of Germany, such as the Ruhr area, and can serve as a model for similar initiatives ([Wikipedia](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional reform)).
The panel discussion during the anniversary celebration was particularly interesting, in which, among others, District President Andreas Bothe and District Administrator Ralf Reinhardt discussed. Reinhardt outlined parallels and differences to structural reforms in the new federal states, which led to a lively exchange. Mayor Christoph Gottheil from Rosendahl pointed out the district's partnership role and even referred to increasing levy contributions, which are a sign of the challenges the region is facing.
Cultural heritage and interactive exhibitions
To mark the anniversary, a comprehensive exhibition will also be presented in the DAS TOR city museum. This will take place from March 21st to 30th, 2025 and will address the effects of municipal reorganization. On display are, among other things, a photo of local politicians who were photographed after the reorganization 50 years ago, as well as a model of the Behrens building in Düsseldorf. There are also interactive stations where visitors can immerse themselves in history in a playful way. The district council meeting bell is made available as a special highlight of the exhibition。([Coesfeld](https://www.coesfeld.de/stadt/aktuelles/artikel/vor-50-jahren-welche-wegen-die-gebietsreform-hinterliess)).
Also worth mentioning is the “collection Saturday” on March 29th, where the public is invited to bring personal experiences and collectibles related to the history of NRW. This promotes identification with the region and invites you to share common memories.
In conclusion, it can be said that the special meeting and the accompanying events help keep the history of the Coesfeld district alive and open a window into the future. One can only hope that this sense of community and citizen engagement will continue to be popular in the years to come.
