Heat wave reaches Kyritz: Schools shorten lessons for students!

The current heat wave is not stopping in Ostprignitz-Ruppin and is leading to shortened teaching times at several schools. How maz-online.de Reportedly, many lessons will be canceled on July 1st and 2nd, 2023 to give students relief in temperatures of up to 37 degrees.

Some children were sent home early on Monday. At the Carl Diercke High School in Kyritz, classes end on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., while Wednesday could possibly end at 11:30 a.m. For many schools, decisions depend on local conditions and room temperature, which means those responsible have to react flexibly.

Individual decisions by schools

The decision about lesson times is the responsibility of each school. René Ide, the deputy head of the Jahn-Gymnasium in Kyritz, for example, plans to finalize the times on Tuesday morning. At other schools, such as the Prinz von Homburg School in Neustadt, decisions are made on a daily basis about possible shortenings. At the Astrid Lindgren Elementary School in Wusterhausen, no decision had been made by midday on Monday.

Besondere Regelungen gibt es auch an der Goethe-Grundschule in Kyritz und an der Diesterweg-Grundschule in Wittstock. Here, for example, lessons are shortened if the room temperature rises above 25 degrees. At the Wilhelm Gentz primary school in Neuruppin, lessons are no longer offered above 25 degrees; however, the children are looked after. The Evangelical School in Neuruppin has shortened lessons from the 5th hour onwards and offers after-school care until 1.30 p.m.

Regulations in other federal states

As a look across the border shows, there are different regulations regarding heat-free conditions in Germany. According to schulministerium.nrw School management in North Rhine-Westphalia can allow heat-free if the room temperature is above 27 degrees Celsius. For students up to grade 6, early dismissal is possible after consultation with parents. If students have health problems, they are allowed to leave class early.

In other federal states, such as Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, regulations even apply to upper grades, which can also provide relief for older students when temperatures are high. Furthermore, in both federal states there is a guideline value of 25 degrees for an earlier end to lessons.

The heat wave shows how important it is to take the physical conditions in schools into account. Particularly for school and elementary school students, great attention is paid to keeping an eye on their performance and well-being.

Decision-makers are required to act in the best interests of students and teachers while at the same time taking the specific circumstances of the schools into account. After all, the weather has a mind of its own – and we have to react to it.
