A dramatic kitchen fire caused a stir in Neuruppin on Thursday. At around 11 a.m., residents on Franz-Maecker-Strasse reported the alarm about a fire. The fire brigade, which arrived with 19 emergency services and four vehicles, had to act quickly to prevent anything worse from happening. While the situation on site appeared to be calm, a fire had already broken out in the resident's apartment while she was not at home.

The emergency services found a burning wooden board on the stove, which triggered a chain reaction and set several kitchen furniture on fire. Unfortunately, any help came too late for one of the two cats that were in the apartment. Despite attempts at resuscitation, the animal succumbed to the smoke, while the second cat was taken to a veterinary practice with suspected severe smoke poisoning. The holiday apartment is now uninhabitable and the damage is estimated at around 50,000 euros.

The dangers of smoke poisoning

The dangers of smoke inhalation are often under-reported. In the event of a fire, these can quickly become life-threatening. Often the main reason for the loss of vital functions is not the burns themselves, but rather the inhalation of toxic smoke. There they rescued the 84-year-old resident of a single-family home, while the fire department with around 40 firefighters was able to prevent the flames from spreading to the roof.

For the affected resident, however, the home is no longer livable, a heavy burden that has not only material but also emotional consequences. The incident could serve as a cautionary tale to highlight the importance of home security.
