Massive traffic jam on the A24: Commuters and holidaymakers fight for time!
At the weekend there was a huge traffic jam on the A24 near Neuruppin. Over 20 accidents meant that many drivers had to wait in the queues for hours, and there was hardly any way through in the neighboring towns either. This was mainly due to the return journey of many holidaymakers from three different federal states, which put additional strain on traffic. The A24, which runs from Hamburg to Kremmen and has a total length of 237 km, is therefore very popular when it comes to expanding and improving the traffic situation. District Administrator Ralf Reinhardt calls for earlier plans to expand the route to three lanes in each direction to be revisited in order to prevent such traffic jams in the future. According to staumelder-karte.de, the A24 is in a partially developed state, with traffic being particularly busy at junctions such as the Havelland triangle.
But traffic wasn't just a hot topic on the A24. In the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district, the planned closure of family centers in Kyritz, Rheinsberg, Wusterhausen and Wittstock is causing a stir. In September, the youth welfare committee will discuss a “change of perspective” that will establish the district’s mobile “family-supporting assistance” from next year. There are already protests against this decision in Kyritz and Wusterhausen, with signature lists available in the towns.
Bridge festival and its winners
During this exciting time, the 30th Bridge Festival also took place in Altfriesack last Saturday, where the Freudenberger/Rediske family won the boat parade with their Cinderella production. The side event was extremely popular and the family has already announced that the next theme for the competition - how could it be otherwise - remains a secret. The Bridge Festival became the highlight of the celebrations in the region and represents the diverse cultural life of the area.
News from the construction work
The highlight and at the same time new territory in Neuruppin are the archaeological finds that came to light during the construction work on Steinstrasse. Unknown parts of the city fortifications before the great city fire of 1787 were discovered. These finds provide exciting insights into the history of the city, while the L167 is currently being rebuilt. Access to Steinstrasse remains closed because important junctions for water, wastewater and district heating have to be relocated.
There is also news in the health sector: the KMG clinic in Kyritz is planning to move the cardiology and gastroenterology departments to Pritzwalk, while the geriatrics department will remain in Kyritz. Over 50 employees are affected by the closure of the KMG clinic in Wittstock, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026. This already raises the question of living space and childcare options for children in Kyritz.
As a rule, traffic statistics, such as the “Traffic in Numbers” handbook published by the Federal Ministry of Transport, lay the foundation for political decisions and planning. The latest edition for 2024/2025 has been available since February 2025 and offers comprehensive insights into traffic and traffic developments that are important for the region.
The current developments in the region show that there is a lot going on, be it on the streets or in society. It remains exciting to see how the situation will develop further.
