Drinking water alarm in Rheinsberg: Bahn dam breaks, villages in danger!
Rheinsberg, Deutschland - What's up in Rheinsberg? The situation around the drinking water network has caused a lot in recent months. Hundreds of households, especially in the villages of Möckern, Kagar, Alt Lutterow, Wallitz, Dorf Zechlin and Spots Zechlin, threatened to be cut off by the water network. A worrying development that results from an old railway embankment between Linow and Möckern, which has been damaged since February 2025. The reason for this? A broken concrete passage that not only leads to water congestion, but also flushes the dam.
This dam is not more ordinary, but also houses essential drinking and wastewater pipes. The bike path has been closed over the railway embankment for months, and warning signs make it unequivocally clear: to enter! The mayor's warning voice, Frank-Rudi Schwochow, increases the urgency of the situation, because without quick measures there could be a serious lack of water. The Lindow-Gransee (TAV) drinking and sewage association has already taken the first steps and has already secured the lines.
repair work and their challenges
The risk of acute is averted, but the problems remain. A broken concrete tube was replaced by a new steel tube to secure the water abandonment and consequently maintain the drinking water supply. However, the repair work not only devours time - it will also cost around 100,000 euros. According to the TAV, which is also responsible for the emergency protection of the lines, the costs here amount to a five -digit sum.
Despite the efforts, the repairs could take until September 2025. The water pipes - decisive for supply - are still in danger as long as the dam is not fully removed. The problem of water supply is not new anyway. The continuously increasing world population and extreme weather conditions, such as excessive hot summer and droughts, are increasingly making drinking water more explosive.
Strengthen awareness of water saving
Although Germany and especially the region around Gransee are currently not affected by water shortages, it is still important to develop awareness of the responsible use of drinking water. The TAV points out that there are helpful tips to reduce water consumption. These include the use of water -saving fittings, the professional disposal of colors and medication as well as avoiding cleaning agents with phosphate.
In particular, the sole garden irrigation could be done by domestic water from cisterns, which saves valuable drinking water. The regional drinking water suppliers are calling for the possibilities to reduce water consumption comprehensively in order to continue to ensure safe and sustainable water supply in the future.
The problem around the railway embankment and securing the water supply illustrates how important it is to continuously check and modernize the infrastructure. A medium to long-term solution is required to prevent similar incidents in the future. For the time being, the bike path remains closed, bypasses are signposted, while the repair work is in full swing.
