Wittstock: Dragonfly light displays remain dark for the time being!

The colorful dragonflies, which have adorned the city center of Wittstock/Dosse since the 2019 State Garden Show, create a special ambience - especially in the dark, when their LED lighting creates magical light displays. These decorative replicas are located in two striking locations: at Bleichwall and Am Kyritzer Tor, both in an impressive XXL format. But currently a technical problem means that the dragonflies sometimes remain in the dark.

City spokesman Jean Dibbert made it clear that the outages were not due to vandalism. Nevertheless, it remains unclear when the dragonfly lighting will work properly again. However, a look at history shows how much the dragonflies became a part of the cityscape: They were installed during the State Garden Show, which took place from April 18th to October 6th, 2019 under the motto “Beautiful views all around”. This event was the sixth of its kind in Brandenburg and attracted visitors from near and far.

Origin and meaning of dragonflies

The state garden show in Wittstock/Dosse, which was awarded the contract in 2015, had the aim of presenting a green town with a historical tradition. The display areas stretched over 13 hectares and surrounded the impressive city wall. Numerous applicants, including cities like Spremberg and Beelitz, were in the running, but Wittstock/Dosse ultimately prevailed. This display was a real draw and the dragonflies have become a popular landmark that continues to delight visitors.

Special features such as the resilient dragonflies on the Kyritzer Tor differ visually from those on the Bleichwall and are an expression of the creative design that was aimed for during the garden show. The atmospheric lighting provided by dragonflies has proven to be very popular - a point that continues to be a focus of the city administration.

Current challenges

The dragonflies on Bleichwall had to contend with storm damage last year, which left some of them missing wings. However, these deficiencies were quickly corrected in April 2024. It currently remains to be seen when the technical malfunction that caused the light problem can be redeemed. The city has not yet announced an exact date for when the dragonflies' luminosity will shine consistently again.

Overall, it shows that the lamps are not only a decorative element, but also a piece of identity for the city of Wittstock/Dosse, which always wants to develop further. Whether in the light or in the shadow - the dragonflies remain a beautiful sight on Bleichwall and Am Kyritzer Tor, astonishing everyone who strolls through these streets.

For many people in the region it is clear: these dragonflies are not only a sign of the city's creative transformation, they also represent the opportunity to experience the beauty of nature up close together. We can only hope that the defects will be repaired soon so that the light displays can shine in their full glory again.
