Potsdam introduces digital residency registration: quick and easy!

On June 20, 2025, the city of Potsdam took a big step towards digitalization. From now on, citizens can register their residence from the comfort of their own home. This progress is documented by rbb24. Potsdam is the first municipality in Brandenburg to introduce this online service. Electronic registration applies to both new registrations and re-registrations, but there is one exception: moving from abroad and registering a secondary residence must still be done in person.

With over 14,700 people moving to Potsdam every year, digital registration will significantly reduce bureaucratic burdens. A personal visit to the citizen service is no longer necessary and there is even no need to make an annoying appointment. The service is provided by the Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg and has the potential to spread beyond other federal states.

Marriage digital – A new service for getting married

But it's not just residence registration that has received digital growth: marriage registration has also been modernized. As part of the new online offer in Potsdam, couples can now register their marriages online under the “Marriage Digital” program. The process is extremely simple: couples enter personal data, upload the necessary evidence and inform the registry office of their intentions to get married. The registry office will then check the documents and will be available if you have any questions. However, a personal visit remains necessary for the final examination and for the marriage ceremony on the wedding day.

The new offer is intended not only to ensure that journeys are shortened, but also to significantly reduce waiting times. Couples can take care of all the necessary formalities in advance, which can make the big day less stressful.

Registration-relevant information

Registering with Citizen Services is an important matter and there are some important rules. For example, every move within Germany must be registered with the registration authority within 14 days of moving in. If specified deadlines are not met, this could be punished as an administrative offense. The registration authority also explains that the registration requirement for children under 16 years of age must be fulfilled by the parents or the people whose apartment they move into.

Another point is the need for a housing provider confirmation, which must be presented when registering. This confirmation must contain important information such as the names and addresses of the landlord and owner as well as the move-in date. Late registration can lead to problems with vehicle registration, obtaining a driver's license or applying for a certificate of good conduct.

The digital change in Potsdam is in full swing, and the new offers will certainly help make the city even more attractive for newcomers. Anyone who is now thinking about moving or would like to take the next big step into their marriage will find the right digital tools at their fingertips in Potsdam.
