Potsdam in focus: Hearing on municipal finances starts today!
On November 3, 2025, Potsdam will be all about municipal finances. The Committee on the Interior and Local Affairs has invited people to hear an important draft bill, which is known as document 8/1724. The aim is to improve the timely preparation of annual financial statements in municipalities, an issue that affects many municipalities. According to the latest reports from Brandenburg State Parliament There are a number of challenges on the agenda.
Many municipalities continue to have difficulties preparing their annual financial statements on time. This leads to delays, which also affect the audit offices, which in turn cannot complete their audits on time. In order to take this problem into account, the draft law includes measures such as expanding the number of annual financial statements to be prepared in a simplified manner and introducing special exceptions.
Invitation to professionals
Top-class experts were invited to the hearing to contribute their expertise on the challenges and solutions in the area of municipal finance. These include Dr. Holger Obermann from the Brandenburg District Council, Jens Graf from the Brandenburg Association of Cities and Municipalities and Lars Große from the Association of Treasurers in the State of Brandenburg. Daniela Hennersdorf, Michaela Werner and Maximilian Wonke will also sit on the podium to share their perspectives as treasurer and mayor. Robert Sesselmann, district administrator of the Sonneberg district in Thuringia, will also be present to contribute his experiences.
The meeting begins at 10 a.m. and will be broadcast live on the state parliament's website. Citizens are invited to take part as guests. However, prior registration is required and must be submitted by the day before. Interested parties can register by calling 0331 966-1170 or by email atinnen committee@landtag.brandenburg.de. Anyone who misses the meeting has the opportunity to access the recording in the media library the following day.
With this step, the state parliament is showing a clear direction to make municipal finances in Brandenburg future-proof. It remains to be hoped that the proposals will fall on fertile ground at the hearing and that municipalities will have a good hand in preparing their annual financial statements.
