A2 closure after cooking oil accident: restrictions until Friday!
A serious accident on Autobahn 2 near Ziesar caused major traffic disruptions last Saturday. Around 24,000 liters of cooking oil spilled onto the road, which resulted in the motorway in the direction of Berlin being completely closed. This lockdown has only been partially lifted since early Thursday morning, as the RBB24 reported.
Two lanes have currently been reopened, but the rest will remain closed until Friday afternoon. The plan was to reopen on Wednesday evening, but heat-related damage to the road made additional road work necessary. These obstacles disrupted the original schedules.
Clean-up work and measures
The cleaning of the roadway is carried out with high water pressure over a distance of over 500 meters to ensure that the cooking oil is completely removed. This is crucial to avoid future accidents. The necessary shoulder work and installation of the guardrails also still need to be completed, with approximately 300 meters of broken guardrails having been replaced. Further information on road safety was provided in the statistics published, which provides comprehensive data on traffic accidents and their causes.
After the accident, in which the 39-year-old driver of the tanker lost consciousness for health reasons, the truck left the road, hit the center guard rail and crashed into a pillar of a sign bridge. The resulting overturn of the trailer immediately blocked two lanes and caused long traffic jams, while the motorway police in Michendorf asked drivers to avoid the area. Unfortunately, the diversion routes were poorly signposted and heavily overloaded, which made the situation even worse MDR reported.
Outlook and speed limits
Motorway 2 will be reopened in a friendlier manner, but there will still be a speed limit of 80 km/h, which will apply at the accident site for the next four weeks. Regular track checks to check grip are planned for this time window to ensure the safety of drivers.
The total cost of cleaning and repairing the damaged area is currently unclear, but the efforts of the specialist company entrusted with the clean-up work demonstrate the importance of dealing with such incidents quickly and efficiently in order to restore traffic flow as quickly as possible.
