Specialist day in Potsdam: Paths to the integration of international specialists
Heimvolkshochschule am Seddiner See, 14554 Seddiner See, Deutschland - An important event is imminent in Brandenburg: On Thursday, July 17, 2025, the specialist day "Work & Education- Specialists and Labor People International" will take place in the home public university on Lake Seddin. This specialist day starts at 1:30 p.m. and lasts until 5:00 p.m. Employers, educational institutions, regional actors and all interested parties who want to work for the topics of demographic change, shortage of skilled workers and integration of people with a history of migration in Brandenburg are invited. The aim of the specialist day is to discuss opportunities and strategies for the acquisition and integration of international specialists, reports Potsdam-Mittelmark.
dr. Christoph Löwer, deputy of the district, will open the event, and the participants can expect exciting short pulses, including Steffi Randig, Bernd Schade and Clara Mnich, who illuminate the topic "International Specialists as Motor Regional Development".
insight into the numbers
The situation on the job market has changed significantly in Brandenburg in recent years. Since 2010, more people have moved to the region every year. In 2023, however, Brandenburg lost around 1,500 people without German citizenship due to migration within Germany. Net immigration from abroad was still around 17,000 people, mostly at the age of 30 to 45. These developments could help counteract the impending decline in the population of the employable age, since by 2040 a sixth of this group could shrink, as the media service explains integration.
shortage of skilled workers and solutions
The shortage of skilled workers also remains an urgent topic at the federal level. According to Deutschlandfunk, around 767,000 jobs nationwide were vacant nationwide in May 2023. In areas such as care, craft and technology, qualified workers are in short supply. In order to counteract this, the federal government plans special measures for recruiting specialists from abroad. This includes the introduction of a "Chance card" that enables people to look for a job in Germany for a year, even if they cannot yet show an employment contract.
These reforms do not come without controversy: critics fear that this could have a negative impact on the integration efforts and also ask the question of bureaucracy. Especially in a time frame where the baby boom generation reaches retirement age, it is becoming increasingly important to win new qualified workers.
At the specialist day, specialist lectures are also offered, for example by Melanie Schreiber, who talks about strategies for international skill, and Pervin Sucuoglu, who highlights the challenges in labor market integration. Practical examples, for example from Druse, Regiobus Potsdam Mittelmark GmbH, and Issam Kanjo from the Damost initiative, round off the program.
A "marketplace of the possibilities" invites the participants to find out about offers for integration, training and skill in skills at the end of the day. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required by July 7, 2025 via the website of the School & Wirtschaftsforum PM.
The developments in Brandenburg and the impending initiatives underline that the region is actively responding to the challenges of the shortage of skilled workers and recognizing the potential of international specialists in order to shape a positive future.
