Kathrin Freundner, the mayor of Caputh, secured a very special award this year. She received the Medal of Merit from the Brandenburg State Parliament, an honor that is only given to selected personalities. A total of 15 award winners received honorable mentions. The award ceremony took place on July 14, 2025 in the State Chancellery in Potsdam [maz-online.de].
Freundner, who is also active as an SPD local association leader and as a community representative in Schwielowsee, has taken on a central role in the social life of her community. She is passionate about the interests of citizens, be it in a sports club or in social and educational projects. For example, she is committed to creating meeting places for young people and maintaining the Caputher Sparkasse branch and actively promotes the realization of a comprehensive school in Schwielowsee. The revival of Caputher Mitte is also one of their successes.
Special laudation and role model function
At the award ceremony, Bjoern Lüttmann, the SPD parliamentary group leader in the state parliament, recognized Freundner's extensive commitment. State Parliament President Ulrike Liedtke presented her with the medal and thanked her for her tireless commitment and her inspiring role model for many. Their dedication and active actions in various areas such as local politics, youth work and environmental and climate protection are invaluable to the region. She also contributed energetically to the volunteer fire department and the sports club, which also led to recognition.

The Medal of Merit is awarded to individuals who distinguish themselves through voluntary commitment, professional achievements or outstanding individual achievements. A total of twelve people were honored at the event on July 11, 2024, including well-known names such as Dr. Hans-Hermann Dehmel, who was honored for founding the Dehmel Foundation to promote education, research and art. Colonel Olaf Detlefsen, who shaped the connection between the Bundeswehr and the state government, also received this honor. Men and women from the fields of art, culture and social work show that commitment in Brandenburg is diverse.
