Michendorf makes footpaths barrier-free - citizens help with reports!

The municipality of Michendorf has big plans: With the aim of making footpaths within the municipality more barrier-free, new measures are planned that will not only benefit people with disabilities, but will also make life easier for older citizens and parents with strollers. The foundation for this is anchored in the mobility concept, which was decided in March 2023. Mayor Claudia Nowka (Alliance for Michendorf) informs that barriers will be gradually removed using our own resources. The aim is to remove obstacles such as high curbs in transition areas in order to make all major pedestrian connections and sidewalks barrier-free and slip-proof. This reports maz-online.de.

In order to make the measures even more effective, the municipality has launched an appeal to residents: Citizens are asked to report problem areas that require barrier-free design. “Any information about sidewalks that need to be improved is important and welcome,” explains Nowka. The information can be submitted to the Michendorf building authority, either by email or by telephone. To lower curbs, an application is required from the Potsdam-Mittelmark district traffic authority. This is a further step in quickly addressing the issue of barrier-free pedestrian paths michendorf.de notes.

Joint efforts for accessibility

The mobility concept is a central part of the long-term planning for the community. The implementation of the barrier-free expansion of the path infrastructure is a project that has many faces. It will not only bring an improvement for people with disabilities, but also for older people, people with disabilities due to accidents and parents with strollers. At the same time, a look beyond the municipal boundaries shows that the requirement for barrier-free mobility is also being taken increasingly seriously in other cities. In Berlin, for example, around 350,000 people live with a degree of disability of over 50 percent, which makes up almost 10% of the population. There, too, there is a lot of investment in barrier-free mobility in order to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities berlin.de.

With the upcoming measures, Michendorf shows that it is becoming increasingly important to break down barriers and optimize mobility for everyone, even in rural areas. The call for active citizen participation shows that collective action is the key to an inclusive and livable community. Every tip from residents is a step in the right direction. So if you know of a problem, don't hesitate to get in touch - there really is something going on!
