Traffic accidents in Germany
Unfortunately, accidents on German roads are not uncommon. According to information from the Statistical offices There were around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in Germany in 2023. The number of accidents has increased in recent decades largely due to increasing traffic. Injury accident rates remained stable last year, although there were still a worrying number of road deaths.
In 2023, 193 people were killed and over 18,600 injured in alcohol-related accidents in Germany. These accidents are often due to insufficient distance, improper speed or driving under the influence of alcohol. While the total number of road deaths in Germany has decreased over the years - from 19,193 in 1970 to 2,839 in 2023 - the downward trend has slowed since the early 2010s, Dutch statistics show.
Risk factors and trends
Statistics show that the risk of being involved in an accident is significantly higher on motorways and federal highways than on state or county roads. The goal of “Vision Zero” aims to have no more traffic fatalities in the EU by 2050 and is supported by the EU transport ministers. Despite all efforts, reducing the number of accidents remains a major challenge, especially under increasingly complex traffic conditions.
Of particular concern is the increasing number of accidents involving e-bikes and e-scooters. In 2023, 23,744 people were injured or killed. This shows that safety on the roads is of utmost importance for all road users - whether drivers or cyclists.
So stay increasingly vigilant on the roads and help make our roads safer.
