Drunk driving in Bad Belzig: 25-year-old crashes into a lantern!

A blood pressure-increasing incident occurred on Friday evening, June 27, 2025, in Bad Belzig on Brandenburger Straße. A 25-year-old driver lost control of his silver VW Golf on a curve and crashed head-on into a lamppost. This led to significant damage to the mast, which then had to be disconnected from the power supply by a specialist company CityReport reported.

The road had to be closed briefly while the accident was being investigated. The driver only sustained minor injuries to his arm in the accident and received outpatient treatment. But it's not just the fact that the driver was drunk that later caused a stir. An alcohol test showed 1.91 per mille, which could have serious legal consequences. The young man's driver's license was confiscated on site and an investigation was launched.

Drunk driving – A widespread problem

Unfortunately, this incident just adds to a long list of alcohol-related traffic accidents. According to the Federal Statistical Office's publication, which is available on the Statista platform, a comprehensive analysis from 1995 to 2023 shows that alcohol plays a serious role in German road traffic. Strangely enough, one in four road deaths in the EU were caused by drunk driving. The numbers make it clear that this problem is more urgent than ever.

The survey by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) showed that 86.5% of car drivers did not consume alcohol before getting behind the wheel. While that sounds positive, the remaining 13.5% is alarming. Young men and novice drivers in particular are at risk of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. It was also found that a large number of drunk driving events take place late in the evening and on weekends.

How safe is road traffic really?

The vast majority, namely 50% of car drivers, believe that it is very unlikely that they will be tested for alcohol. This shows that although society is aware of the problem, many still underestimate the risk. The driver in our report was obviously one of them, because while he may have been heading for the “end of the day,” he completely misjudged the dangers of driving under the influence.

It remains to be hoped that further educational measures and more stringent controls will make such incidents less common in the future. Responsible use of alcohol could not only save lives, but also help make roads safer - for all road users.

The prevention initiative is already underway and the data collected from recent studies will help raise awareness of the risks of drinking alcohol while driving. According to current statistics, these efforts are essential to keeping the streets of our cities and towns safe.
