Attention anime fans: Filmpark Babelsberg is becoming a cosplay hotspot!
In the coming days, the Filmpark Babelsberg in Potsdam will once again be transformed into a mecca for fans of anime and manga. Running from July 4th to 6th, the anime fair will attract a large number of visitors, with over 20,000 fans expected to immerse themselves in the world of Japanese pop culture. Organized by Emania Media Service, the event promises a varied program that will make the hearts of all anime enthusiasts beat faster. Tagesspiegel reports that About half of the visitors will appear in elaborate cosplays, including many characters from the popular “Solo Leveling” series.
Celesina Scheunemann, 29 years old and an experienced cosplayer, will be on site as a helper. For them, the costumes aren't just clothing; They are the results of months of work and dedication, as many of the costumes are sewn in-house. This shows the commitment of the community, which has long since grown beyond the German scene.
Diverse program and highlights
The fair not only offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the colorful worlds of cosplay, but also a range of other events: from anime premieres and J-pop concerts to manga workshops and delicious Japanese street food. A special highlight will be the world premiere of the anime “Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra”, with guests directly from Japan. The fair will be accompanied musically by, among others, the Japanese bands Nano and ChouCho as well as pianist Rina Tober and Megumi Hayami (Shamisen).
Visitors will also experience a “matsuri” where game stalls and delicious specialties such as ramen, takoyaki and taiyaki are offered. Kendo performances will also be featured on all three days. Saturday brings the highlight of the event with the performance of the drum group Iki Iki Taiko and fireworks.
Tickets and visitor magnets
Tickets for Friday and Sunday are still available, while Saturday is already sold out. Day tickets cost 50 euros, for under 18s only 35 euros. However, these can only be purchased at the box office.
The anime and manga culture in Germany has developed significantly in recent years, which is also reflected in the growing events like the DoKomi lies. This is one of the largest conventions for anime fans in Europe and attracts more and more visitors from across the continent every year. This shows the strength and growing interest in Japanese culture.
The anime and manga boom even goes back in history. The first Japanese animated series and manga were not able to gain a foothold in Germany immediately, but the scene experienced its breakthrough in the 90s with series such as “Dragon Ball” and “Sailor Moon” – Japan Digest explains that RTL2 started broadcasting anime in 1993, which further fueled the popularity of this cultural form. Manga are now so popular that in 2023 two out of three comics sold in Germany were manga.
Another indication of the boom: Anime sales in Germany are estimated at almost 100 million euros in 2024, while the market in France is an incredible 381 million euros. The upcoming anime fair in Potsdam will certainly represent a further step towards even greater networking and dissemination of anime and manga culture in Germany.
