Babelsberg is booming: MediaTech Hub unites start-ups and AI innovation!

A lot is happening in Germany's media landscape, and Potsdam-Babelsberg is at the forefront. Katja Richter, the managing director of the MediaTech Hub, is fully committed to promoting the innovative city and attracting new start-ups. Your office, in a prime location between the film university and the well-known film studios, is the hub for digital developments.

The MediaTech Hub currently supports 72 start-ups, including 20 that were founded this year. An outstanding example of success is the company Koppla, which specializes in AI-supported scheduling in the construction industry. With over 100 customers, the start-up, founded in 2020, recently received an impressive €6 million in funding. Another example is Hashtag Daily, which was acquired by Ufa in 2021 and focuses on social media.

Focus on artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence plays a central role in the MediaTech Hub and generates great interest in the industry. An AI conference for the creative and cultural industries was launched in 2023 and will take place for the third time in December. The topics range from current tools and instruments to productivity and the protection of AI-generated information.

In view of the challenges that Ufa's upcoming move to Berlin brings with it, Katja Richter sees the need for targeted location management in Babelsberg. Ufa co-managing director Natalie Clausen justifies the move with the perception of Berlin as a media metropolis. Nevertheless, Richter is convinced that Babelsberg, with its film university and numerous institutions, has the potential to remain an innovative location.

Future prospects and expansion plans

With a clear plan in mind, the MediaTech Hub would like to support a total of 65 additional start-ups from Brandenburg and around 100 start-ups from all over Germany by 2028. To this end, they are planning to build their own center with modern offices and coworking spaces to meet the needs of the start-ups.

The MediaTech Hub was founded in 2017 and has since established itself as the only competence center for media technologies in Germany. The latest location survey shows that a total of 145 companies with 4,600 employees and an annual turnover of one billion euros are based in Babelsberg.

In a further step, the partnership could lead to institutions such as MediaTech School in Dallas, Texas, which specializes in immersive media art, will help further promote exchange and education in creative fields. This institution enjoys an excellent reputation in the fields of music, film and animation, offering a combination of technical expertise and artistic expression.

The challenges and opportunities that arise for the MediaTech Hub in the coming years are great. How the location develops remains to be seen - but Katja Richter has a good eye for the future, and her vision could take Babelsberg even further forward.
