Northeast German Championships: Potsdam shines in gymnastics!

The Northeast German Girls Championships took place in Potsdam on Saturday. This sporting highlight attracted 79 talented gymnasts from 9 different clubs, including SC Potsdam, KTZ Potsdam and the Berliner Turnerschaft. The event was prepared and secured with a lot of commitment by the support association of the “Luftschiffhafen” Potsdam gymnastics talent school, which apparently had a very positive influence on the atmosphere.

The university gymnasium, located not far from the airship port, was the place where spectators could watch exciting competitions in the AK 7, AK 8 and AK 9 age groups. The SCP gymnasts were particularly successful and were able to win several medals. Malia Sawyerr took an excellent second place in the AK 7 and was even the best in her age group on vault. Francesca Gherasudis also stood out in the AK 9 and not only secured second place in the overall ranking, but also shone as the winner on the floor.

Results of the SCP gymnasts

The placings of the gymnasts from Potsdam are remarkable and reflect the high level of training:

  • AK 7:
    • Maria Resch: 20. Platz
    • Emma Wagner: 13. Platz
    • Emma Robben: 7. Platz
    • Malia Sawyerr: 2. Platz
  • AK 8:
    • Katharina Zang: 18. Platz
    • Lilith Glowinski: 16. Platz
    • Maria-Magdalena Rebisz: 4. Platz
    • Mila Lechler: 2. Platz
  • AK 9:
    • Francesca Gherasudis: 2. Platz

All SCP gymnasts were able to celebrate silver medals, which made the Northeast German runner-up championship a great success for the club. The individual performance on the apparatus was also particularly impressive, where, for example, Malia Sawyerr took first place on vault and second place on beam.

The highlights of the event

Another highlight of the day was Kathleen Friedrich, the President of SC Potsdam. She didn't miss the opportunity to demonstrate her skills on the horizontal bar. Kathleen Friedrich has had an impressive career: She started as a gymnast before switching to athletics. Their commitment to gymnastics and their presence at this event are a sign of the club's leadership's solidarity with the active female athletes who offer a wide scope for gymnastics in Germany.

The Rostock Hanseatic Gymnastics Club was recognized as the most successful gymnastics team of the day, winning seven titles. In addition, TTS/SC Potsdam and SC Berlin won four championship titles together. This clearly shows the competitiveness and high standards that exist in the region. Events of this kind help to strengthen gymnastics in Germany, a sport that was coined in the 19th century by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, the “father of gymnastics,” and has since developed into an important sports movement. According to turnen100.de, gymnastics today has over five million members in German clubs.

Overall, the Northeast German Championships offered a successful event that thrilled both the participants and the spectators and underlined the importance of gymnastics in the German sports landscape.
