Potsdam in color: history through 100 years of powerful photographs!
On August 16, 2025, the eagerly awaited exhibition “Potsdam in Color. Photographic (Inside) Views” opens at the Potsdam Museum. This exhibition will be on view until September 14, 2025 and shows an impressive collection of color photographs of the city's history that span almost 100 years of Potsdam's city history. The location for this special presentation is the shopping street of Potsdam Central Station, a place that is likely to attract many visitors due to its central location. The exhibition is a cooperation with the center management of the Bahnhofspassagen and is the Potsdam Museum's third exhibition in this context.
The photographs shown take us on a journey through time through everyday life and urban redevelopment in Potsdam. From the late 1930s to the 1980s, the urban development and changes in the city's color are documented. The first color photographs were taken after the introduction of Agfacolor 35mm film in 1936, and the photographs from the 1930s and 1940s show Potsdam before the devastation of war, often taken by amateur photographers.
A look at the development of Potsdam
The post-war photographs capture everyday life between destruction and makeshift arrangements. In the 1950s, the images document the laborious reconstruction of the city amidst rubble. The following decades show the change towards a socialist city, especially the changes that accompanied the construction of the Wall in 1961, when Potsdam was abruptly separated from Berlin. The 1970s were characterized by socialist urban development, while many old buildings faded into the background and finally the 1980s showed both stagnation and civic engagement.
The exhibition's additional offering is particularly exciting: QR codes on the photographs enable visitors to access further information about the works on display. The color photographs are also available in the PotsdamHistory app under the title “Potsdam in Color”. The Potsdam Museum is also actively looking for private color photos from the 1990s that could complement the collection. Anyone interested is asked to contact outreach@rathaus.potsdam.de.
