Potsdam is starting impressive inner city projects for a better quality of life!

There is reason to be happy in Potsdam, New York! Today, September 15, 2025, the long-awaited streetscape and riverwalk projects finally kicked off. Mayor Alexandra Jacobs-Wilke described this day as one of the most important for inner city developments, as the municipality is making extensive investments to beautify the cityscape and increase the quality of life.

Construction, which will begin in fall 2023, will focus on Raymond Street and the Sandstone Art Walk. These projects benefit from a $10 million state grant Potsdam received in 2019 to revitalize its downtown area. Around half of this sum will now be used for current projects that are intended to bring about a thorough renovation of the city center. To expand the areas of operation, work is also planned on Market Street and Maple Street in spring 2026.

Energy efficiency and a more welcoming city center

The planned improvements are diverse. Renewed streets and sidewalks, modern drainage systems, and energy-efficient decorative street lights are just some of the positive developments that will soon shape the city center. Planting new street trees and refreshing landscaping are also on the agenda. Mayor Wilke emphasizes the importance of these measures in creating a safer and more welcoming environment.

Another highlight of the initiative is the Riverwalk Trail, which will create walkable access at all three downtown bridges. This not only strengthens the connection to the surrounding parks and the Raquette River, but also promotes local recreation within the city.

Focus on community and transparency

The community is committed to working closely with local businesses and residents to promote harmonious development during construction. Shops will remain open to the public throughout the construction phases and citizens are called upon to support local businesses. Regular updates will be available on the township's website and Facebook page, and a public information session prior to the start of work on Market Street will provide additional information.

These measures are not only part of an urban upgrade, but also reflect the overarching principles of sustainability that are taken into account within the framework of funding programs. In Germany, for example, urban development funding has been supporting sustainable urban development for over 50 years and supports this type of project, such as the one planned in Potsdam, with state money. This shows a connection to the international discussion about urban growth and climate protection, as is also stated on the website of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. The importance of such projects is not only local, but also has far-reaching effects on urban development as a whole.

With these exciting developments in the city center, Potsdam is opening up new perspectives for the future. What remains to be seen is how citizens will accept the changes and, above all, how the community will come together in the coming months to ensure an attractive and liveable cityscape. Information and regular updates on construction progress can be found on the village website and WWNYTV.
