Serious accident: cyclist collides with tram in Potsdam!

This Thursday morning, July 3, 2025, there was a shocking accident at Johannes-Kepler-Platz in Potsdam: a cyclist collided with a tram. This report was confirmed shortly after 10 a.m. by the fire department, rescue service and police, who were immediately alerted to the incident. The cyclist's serious injuries are still unclear, but the emergency services took him to hospital for medical treatment. The police have also started investigations into the exact cause of the accident and identified temporary interruptions in tram traffic.

Interestingly, this is not the first incident of this kind in Potsdam. A similar collision occurred on the Long Bridge on Tuesday morning, in which a 35-year-old cyclist tried to cross the street despite the red light. The woman was violently hit by a tram that was on the way to the main train station. Fortunately, the 120 passengers and the tram driver were unharmed. Nevertheless, the seriously injured cyclist had to be taken to hospital, while the property damage was estimated at around 500 euros. Here too, there were short-term restrictions on tram traffic, which underlines the urgent need for more attention in road traffic. This is reported by the Daily Mirror.

A worrying trend

Accidents involving cyclists are a serious issue in Germany. According to current statistics from the Federal Statistical Office, a total of 441 cyclists died in road traffic in 2024, which is 33 fewer than in the previous year, but represents a worrying increase in a ten-year comparison. What is particularly alarming is that one in six road fatalities was a cyclist. According to statistics, 70.7 percent of the 92,882 bicycle accidents resulting in personal injuries were collisions with cars, with drivers being primarily to blame in 75.3 percent of cases. These figures illustrate how important it is to be conscious when driving on the road, especially for cyclists who are particularly at risk due to their vulnerable position. This information comes from an article by daily news.

Overall, it appears that cyclists are particularly at risk in road traffic. The data shows that 43.5 percent of fatally injured cyclists were riding e-bikes, which is almost five times more than a decade ago. Seniors aged 65 and over are particularly vulnerable and make up a large proportion of cyclists who have accidents. This is a wake-up call for all road users to pay even more attention to each other.

The incidents in Potsdam are not only tragic, but also an urgent call to take road safety seriously. Every accident should remind us that a good hand in traffic not only affects our own protection, but also the well-being of those around us.
