City cycling 2025: Cycling for a better climate in Potsdam-Mittelmark!

What is happening with cycling? From September 7th to 27th, 2025, the eagerly awaited “CITY CYCLING” campaign will take place in the Potsdam-Mittelmark region, inviting you to take climate-friendly everyday routes by bike. This initiative aims to encourage as many citizens as possible from Potsdam-Mittelmark and neighboring municipalities such as Teltow, Stahnsdorf, Nuthetal, and others to actively participate. Every distance traveled can be counted over 21 days - whether for the way to work, errands or leisure activities. Both individuals and groups are eligible and can register using the STADTRADELN app or online in the action portal.

Better, faster, greener – that could be the motto of this campaign. In 2024, participants have already covered an impressive 347,000 kilometers, which is almost 100,000 kilometers more than in the previous year. This clearly shows the potential that cycling has. The cycling representative Melanie Gäbler and the CITY CYCLING coordinator Claudia Schneider are available to answer any questions and look forward to active participation, which will also contribute to climate protection.

Why cycling is so important

Cycling not only protects the environment, but also has numerous positive effects on health. Experts from the Umweltbundesamt emphasize that in urban regions up to 30% of car journeys could be switched to cycling. The important thing is that over 40% of car journeys in major German cities are shorter than 5 kilometers. In other words, the bike could clearly have the edge here. It was also found that cyclists in the Netherlands are on average one less working day sick, which underlines the positive impact on health.

Road traffic is not only a source of CO₂ emissions, but also the noise that pollutes our cities. Cycling can make a significant contribution to relieving stress and at the same time improve air quality. As part of the CITY CYCLING campaign, awareness is raised that every bike ride is a relief for our environment.

Participation and incentive system

Potsdam.de points out that teams can be formed, be it in friends, work, club or school groups. This makes cycling not only an environmentally friendly act, but also a social experience. The campaign categorizes the most active cyclists and teams and also includes municipalities that can become role models in climate protection through their participation.
