A14 under construction: This is how the streets in the Altmark are changing!
A lot is currently happening in the heart of the Altmark: The A14, an important motorway project, is taking shape. Specifically, it involves an 11-kilometer-long section between Wittenberge and Seehausen-Nord, which is scheduled to be completed by mid-2026. Loud Northern Courier Road users will face temporary traffic light regulations and reduced speeds on the B189 while construction work progresses. So there's something there!
In recent months the traffic situation has worsened for residents, but this is in the hope of better connections in the future. The access roads to the B195 in the direction of Cumlosen and Lenzen have been closed since April due to construction work. But there is light at the end of the tunnel: Deges project manager Silke Kinner has announced that this access will be accessible again from August.
Construction progress and challenges
Another important aspect is the ongoing work on the Elbe Bridge, an impressive steel structure that offers plenty of space at 412 meters long and 31 meters wide. This bridge will not only span the A14, but also direct new traffic flows in the region. The final advance of the power bridge was recently carried out using a hydraulic strand lifting system, which can reach speeds of up to 10 meters per hour Wittenberge.de reported. The entire A14 project is of considerable dimensions, with costs of around 2.3 billion euros for a total of 155 kilometers.
In the city of Wittenberge, the construction site also means longer travel distances for residents, who now have to accept detours of up to 30 kilometers. Complaints from residents are obviously taken seriously by Deges. The planned traffic routing will be examined in consultation with the citizens in order to keep the inconvenience as low as possible.
A wide net
The A14 is part of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030, which, together with around 2,000 project proposals, analyzes the need for future roadworthiness, far away from the usual grubby spots and deficiencies, but also taking advantages and disadvantages into account. Further information on this is available in the PRINS project information system, which allows a deep insight into the extensive planning and evaluation criteria for the A14 ( bvwp-projekte.de ).
Work on this section of the highway is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2027. But until then, it is important to find a constant balance between construction progress and the needs of residents and the traffic passing through. Shorter distances and a better transport network could soon await the region - and that will not only make driving more pleasant, but also make business trips easier.
