Adventure over Perleberg: Sightseeing flight with the Antonov 2 for those afraid of heights!

A very special adventure awaits Julia on September 15, 2025: She received a voice message from her boss inviting her to a sightseeing flight in the historic Antonov AN-2. This flight is organized by Aero-Club Perleberg and takes you over the picturesque towns of Perleberg and Wittenberge as well as the majestic course of the Elbe. Highly popular with aviation enthusiasts, the Antonov AN-2 is known as the largest single-engine biplane aircraft in the world, equipped with a powerful 1000 hp radial engine.

Despite her fear of heights, Julia cannot escape the tension. She is not alone; Jessica, a fellow traveler who also struggles with a fear of heights, also decided to dare the adventure. Before takeoff, Julia is given comprehensive information by the experienced pilot Johann Root, who has been flying for over 40 years. A safety check is essential, and the pilot explains how to start the engine manually to avoid a deflagration.

The flight and the experience

The sightseeing flight costs 50 euros and takes around 20 minutes. After the safety briefing and a quick look at the Antonov, which impresses with its wingspan of more than 18 meters and a length of 12 meters, the time has finally come: the aircraft takes off with a stability that makes this aircraft legendary. On board there are spectacular views and a unique feeling of flying while the pilot shares interesting information about the surroundings.

But the wind bothers the young adventurer. During the flight the Antonov rocks and suddenly Julia feels sick. She has to sit down while Jessica offers her a spit bag. “It's windy and I'm having trouble enjoying the beautiful view,” Julia later admits. Nevertheless, the plane also has moments in which she enjoys the view of the town of Perleberg and the impressive Ferris wheel.

The return to Perleberg

After an impressive sightseeing flight over Wittenberge, the Antonov routinely returns to the airfield. The pilot brings the plane gently to a landing, and although Julia feels dizzy, her excitement about the adventure prevails. “I would do a sightseeing flight again at any time – next time perhaps in calm conditions,” is her conclusion.

The sightseeing flight with the Antonov not only offers an unforgettable experience, but is also a wonderful gift idea for adrenaline junkies and nostalgics. The fascinating history of this machine dates back to the 1940s, when it was developed by Oleg Antonov in the Soviet Union. Over 18,000 examples were built and used for various purposes - from passenger flights to agricultural flights.

So if you want to experience the feeling of freedom and the sound of the air, you can prepare for another adventure at various airfields in Germany and Europe. Booking is easy online and the experience remains in the passengers' memories for a long time.
