Wittenberge train station: major construction site for a new platform and Deutschlandtakt!
There is currently a lot of activity at Wittenberge train station. Construction site fences frame the action, and a crane and numerous construction vehicles create the conditions for comprehensive renovation. How Northern Courier reports, the station will be fundamentally modernized as a result of the closure of the route between Berlin and Hamburg. An additional platform will expand the offering to seven tracks, which means that six trains can be handled at the same time in the future.
Wittenberge plays a central role as a crossing point for three important train lines: Berlin-Hamburg, Stendal-Magdeburg and Perleberg-Neuruppin. In order to meet the requirements of the planned “Germany clock”, which provides for a 30-minute interval between Hamburg and Berlin, the infrastructure at this important junction will be significantly improved. Trains will run every hour between Ludwigslust and Wittenberge, while the route from Copenhagen via Wittenberge to Berlin will run every 120 minutes.
Construction progress and modernizations
Work is currently underway on the new track 7, which will be over 700 meters long, in order to integrate freight traffic in the best possible way. Over 30 switches will be renewed or replaced and around 120 kilometers of cable will be laid under the tracks. This shows how seriously the renovation work is being taken. New screens for train departures that have already been installed ensure that travelers are informed about everything important. The weather shelters will also be refreshed to provide passengers with more seating.
An extension of the pedestrian tunnel is also being planned, which will be equipped with new elevators, fresh flooring and new wall cladding. The Time emphasizes that the construction work has been running since August and should be completed by the end of April 2024 - a tight program!
Traffic planning during construction work
The construction work requires a complete closure of the route, which means that long-distance traffic will be rerouted and regional traffic will be replaced by buses. The first results are already visible, as the project is on schedule and around three quarters of the tracks have already been replaced. The planned construction projects also include the renovation of 28 other train stations, including Karstädt, Bad Wilsnack and Glöwen.
The signaling technology is also being brought up to date. A total of 50 signals, including 35 at Wittenberge station, will be replaced. The signal masts are on the delivery schedule in mid-November and are to be delivered and installed by helicopter, which represents further progress in this comprehensive project.
The people of Wittenberge can look forward to extensive improvements to the station, which will not only increase the comfort of travelers, but also increase the efficiency of rail transport in the region. In the future, the train station will become even more of a hub for travelers and goods, and that is positive news for the entire region!
