Karstädt: Train station will become a train station of the future” – renovation will start soon!
In an exciting turnaround for the Karstädt region, the station will be converted into a “station of the future” as part of the general renovation of the Berlin-Hamburg line. This reports maz-online.de. Karstädt, which opened in 1859 and was once an important railway hub, is now facing major modernization. The station has changed a lot over the years and currently appears dilapidated, but with the planned general renovation the tide is changing.
Deutsche Bahn is planning numerous improvements to the station by May 2026. This includes extending the platforms, introducing new wayfinding systems and installing modern LED lighting and information displays. The lounge area will be equipped with new seating, waste containers and weather protection elements. Improving accessibility through a newly designed underpass with ramps is also particularly important.
Renovation on a large scale
The renovation work will take place during a nine-month route closure between August 2025 and April 2026. During this time, regional traffic will be increased by faster regional lines, while long-distance trains will be rerouted, which may lead to longer journey times. Around 230 trains use the connection between Berlin and Hamburg every day, resulting in a volume of up to 30,000 passengers. However, when asked about the exact number of passengers, Deutsche Bahn remains vague because data for smaller stations is not published.
Karstädt is one of eleven train stations in Brandenburg that are being considered in this upswing. The modernization could give the station new importance in the regional mobility network. At the same time, the reception building is a listed building, which makes the conversion even more challenging.
Part of a larger plan
But Karstädt is not alone: deutschebahn.com reports on similar projects along the Hamburg-Berlin route, where four other stations are also being converted into future stations. The aim of the modernization is clear: increasing comfort and attractiveness for travelers. These renovations are intended to promote an inviting overall concept that integrates weather protection, modern information systems and accessibility improvements.
A total of 28 stations are planned as part of the general renovation, with 180 kilometers of tracks and around 200 switches being replaced. These measures are part of a nationwide initiative to make train stations more attractive and functional.
Deutsche Bahn is relying on a concept that looks at the transport stations, buildings and the surrounding area together. This is possible in particular thanks to the amended Federal Railway Expansion Act (BSWAG) of 2024, which promotes the integration of cities and municipalities. In total, DB plans to modernize around 950 of its stations this year to optimize the travel experience for all passengers.
The coming years promise exciting changes for train stations and mobility in the region. With its new equipment and structure, Karstädt could soon be at the heart of the regional transport network again. Completion of the renovation is scheduled for May 2026, and we will be excited to see how the station will develop by then.
