The other two men, 50 and 59 years old, acted as managing directors and authorized signatory of the construction company in question and are charged with aiding and abetting the trafficking of narcotics in large quantities. This legal dispute is not without reason, as the demand for cocaine is high in the heart of Germany, especially in large cities like Berlin. But the drugs were only discovered in December 2024 during a customs check in the port of Hamburg. At that moment, 64 packages of cocaine were seized in a container that was actually filled with wooden beams, but was delivered without the drugs because the construction company had since gone bankrupt. Investigators are sounding the alarm because violence among drug traffickers is increasing, and reports of calls for murder and brutal attacks are commonplace.

Investigations and aftermath

After the cocaine was discovered, the police carried out searches in Berlin, Bochum and Gladbeck and confiscated cell phones and important documents. This all happened as part of an investigation that led to the three men being arrested in February. The 50-year-old main defendant is currently in custody, while the two alleged accomplices have been released on conditions.

This situation is not an isolated case. Over 300 tonnes of cocaine were seized in the EU in 2022, marking the sixth consecutive record year. Around 43 tons of cocaine were also intercepted in Germany in 2023. Experts warn that increased drug trafficking is directly correlated with rising cocaine purity levels, indicating an oversupply. The impact of drug-related crime is felt throughout society, and last but not least, increasing brutality among gangs poses a serious security risk.

The trial is expected to last eight days and is scheduled to last until October 17th. Further developments are eagerly awaited as the public hopes for a clear stance from the judiciary on this highly explosive matter.
