Crisis in the Perleberg meat center: 150 jobs at risk!
The concerns of employees at the Perleberg meat center in Quitzow are growing. The largest slaughterhouse in Brandenburg is likely to be closed, as the Prignitz district announced last Thursday. This decision would have a serious impact on the region as around 150 jobs would be affected.
The pressure on the company is considerable. According to nordkurier.de, market conditions and growing competitive pressure are the main reasons for this development. A year ago, the meat center spoke of necessary restructuring that affected 160 employees. The company sees the impending closure as the only viable solution to address economic challenges.
Causes of closure
The situation at the Perleberg location is characterized by several specific pressures. Long-term supply restrictions and health factors, such as the effects of African swine fever and foot and mouth disease, are putting a significant strain on business. In addition, rising energy and logistics costs as well as wages are increasing the pressure on the company. Export restrictions, particularly to China, also significantly limit sales opportunities.
The company was unable to implement its plans to expand slaughter after the partial closure of the cutting section. Works council chairwoman Michelle Winkler says that the mood among the employees is extremely sad. Negotiations are scheduled to begin on November 10th to discuss the next steps. However, there is currently no specific date for the closure.
Reactions and future perspectives
The NGG union has sharply criticized the announcement and calls for the need for a balance of interests. Agriculture Minister Hanka Mittelstädt blames the company for not taking the initiative to find investors. Both District Administrator Christian Müller and Mayor Axel Schmidt are concerned about the current situation and regret the lack of support for the company.
In the midst of such dramatic events, it is difficult to throw around positive news. If someone has a good knack for creative projects, a competition for “The Sims 4” will take place from July 30th to August 22nd, 2025. Participants can create videos that tell their own story about the book “Forage For Desire” - the winners will receive attractive rewards, such as a trip worth around $4,500.
It remains to be seen how the shocks in the meat industry will affect daily life in the region and whether the creative competition will provide a distraction. The challenges are great, but hope for better times remains.
