Lutz Lange buys border tower in Cumlosen: A new tourism destination!

The former border tower in Cumlosen recently caused a stir when it changed hands at an auction in Berlin for an impressive 156,000 euros. The minimum bid started at a modest 5,000 euros, but the border tower was the most sought-after item at this year's summer auction by Deutsche Immobilienauktionen AG (DGA) on June 27th. Lutz Lange, an entrepreneur from Wittenberge and operator of the forest pool in Seehausen, was ultimately able to win the bidding war after increasing his original budget planning, which started at 100,000 euros, to up to 200,000 euros [Nordkurier](/regional/prignitz/lutz-lange-has-the-gdr-border-tower-in-cumlosen-auctioned-that-has-he-before-so-3720563).

A total of 65 bidders took part in the auction, but with a bid of 10,000 euros or more, only five remained in the running. The tension rose rapidly as the price shot up to 100,000 euros within a few minutes. In the end there were two more who competed for the coveted tower until Lutz Lange finally won the contract [az-online](/altmark/seehausen/seehaeuser-waldbadoperator-lange-ersteigert-ehemaligen- Grenzrum-93811272.html).

Planning for the border tower

Lutz Lange already has big plans for the former border tower. According to his statements, three holiday apartments and a museum will be built on the upper floor, which will focus on the history of the border watchtower and the inner-German border. Access to the museum will be free for both tourists and locals, keeping the historical heritage alive.

A café is not planned as the location is considered unfavorable for regular visitors. Instead, Lange would like to exploit the cultural and tourist potential of the area. Boat tours and bicycle trips that lead from the Hotel Alte Ölmühle in Wittenberge to the border tower are part of the project. In addition, a cooperation with the Blue Light Museum in Beuster under the direction of Ralf von Hagen is being sought [Nordkurier](/regional/prignitz/lutz-lange-hat-den-ddr- Grenzturm-in-cumlosen-auktionert-das-hat-er-vor-damit-3720563) [az-online].

Renovation plans and financing

The renovation of the listed tower is estimated to cost around 250,000 to 300,000 euros, a financial burden that Lange can manage without taking out a loan. The work is planned for 2025 so that everything can be completed in time for the 2027 State Garden Show in Wittenberge. With the experience that Lange has gained in the renovation of listed buildings such as Kletzke Castle and the chapel in Klein Linde, he is well equipped for this project.

The border tower in Cumlosen is one of a number of border monuments on the former inner-German border that serve as places of commemoration and remembrance, many of which point to the history of the division of Germany [Wikipedia](https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_von_ Grenzdenkmalen_an_der_ehemaligen_innerdeutschen_Grenze).
