New signal masts for Wittenberge: helicopters in use!
There is a lot of work going on around the Wittenberg train station these days. Under the direction of DB InfraGO, a helicopter is supporting the construction of around 30 new signal masts, which are being transported by helicopter from a storage area on Bad Wilsnacker Straße. This is not only a logistical challenge, but also a measure for the comprehensive renovation of the station Northern Courier reported.
The work started with a day's delay due to dense fog in Hamburg, but project manager Julian Fassing assures that the schedule can be adhered to. The renewal of the signals is part of a larger renovation, which also includes a new platform and two additional tracks. In addition, numerous switches will be renewed, which will significantly increase the capacity and safety of the operation.
A future-proof rail system
Why is this renewal so important? The railway connection between Hamburg and Berlin is not only 278 kilometers long, but also a key piece of German and European rail transport. Around 110 long-distance trains, 270 regional trains and 90 freight trains use the route every day, which corresponds to a total of around 470 trains German railway. Due to the high load, extensive work will be carried out on the route from August 2025 to April 2026. Not only tracks, but also signaling and safety technology will be renewed.
As part of this general renovation, which also includes 28 transport stations, an estimated 165 kilometers of track must be replaced. In addition, 249 new switches are being installed and work is also being done diligently on the overhead line. Six new transfer points are intended to increase stability and flexibility in operations. These measures ensure that the infrastructure remains fit for the future.
Improvements for everyone
All of the construction sites also take the environment into account: the vegetation work, which will begin in October 2025, is intended to keep the trees along the route in check - they should not be higher than the distance to the tracks. This means that the route not only remains safe, but also ecologically compatible. DB Engineering Consulting emphasizes that the general renovation is aimed at sustainable infrastructure improvements.
In addition, train stations will also be renovated during the closures, which will, among other things, improve the barrier-free infrastructure. The entire renovation process by 2030 is important in order to sustainably strengthen the rail infrastructure and increase travel quality. The faster the trains run, the more passengers we can welcome - that's good business for Deutsche Bahn and the environment.
With all of these measures, Wittenberg train station will not only be safer, but also more modern. This will make rail in the region a little more future-proof.
