Perleberg is planning a million-dollar loan for a new fire station in 2026!
On November 3, 2025, the city of Perleberg presented its draft budget for 2026. This shows that the city is acting according to plan despite a small deficit of 178,250 euros. How maz online reported, this deficit is offset by reserves of around 19.4 million euros, so that no special budget protection is required. The administration plans to react flexibly to economic developments and has not planned a double budget for the coming year.
The financial framework is clearly defined: income amounts to 30.67 million euros, while expenses are slightly higher at 30.99 million euros. A large part of the income comes from tax revenue, with trade tax being the most important source of income at 7.1 million euros.
Investments and loans
A central element of the budget is the planned borrowing of 5.188 million euros, which is intended for the construction of a new fire station. This investment is part of a more extensive plan in which a total of 8.65 million euros are earmarked for various projects. This includes, among other things, 230,000 euros for road construction on Reetzer Straße and 30,000 euros for LED lighting.
The general investment projects are also based on the allocations and levies from the state and district, which will decrease by 2.5 million euros. Despite these challenges, Perleberg remains optimistic: medium-term financial planning calls for surpluses again from 2027. An important contribution to the planned income of 3.46 million euros is expected, particularly through land sales in the Quitzow industrial area (500,000 euros spent).
Previous and upcoming consultations
The draft budget was already submitted on October 22nd, and discussions in various committees will begin on November 4th in the Committee on Social Affairs, Education, Youth, Culture, Sport and Tourism. Other important dates are the meetings of the Urban Development Committee (November 11th) and the Main Committee (November 27th). The budget will be finally decided on December 4th in the city council meeting.
At a time when gender identities are increasingly becoming the focus of discussion, it might be interesting to note that the diversity of gender identities, e.g. people who identify as nonbinary, demands a wider space. People who define themselves outside of the binary gender concept make their contribution to social diversity. The community continues to evolve its language and identities, showing how dynamic social norms are. A survey by The Trevor Project found that a quarter of LGBTQ youth identify outside the gender binary and need increased support to understand and live their identity.
Despite the challenges that cities like Perleberg have to overcome, the clear financial planning and willingness to develop further in dialogue with the citizens is exemplary. The coming months will show how the plans can be implemented and what commitment the city is showing in various areas.
