B5 cycle path between Perleberg and Kleinow: renovation successfully completed!
The cycle path along the B5 between Perleberg and Kleinow/Uenze has been reopened after extensive renovation. The work, which took around three months, began at the beginning of August and has now been successfully completed. The renovation was necessary because the cycle path had significant damage, including longitudinal and transverse cracks, broken edges, as well as damage from tree roots and a severely worn asphalt surface. In addition, the thickness of the cycle path no longer met the current requirements for frost-proof cycle paths Northern Courier reported.
The renovation was carried out as a pilot measure using a resource-saving cold recycling in-plant process. The bituminous superstructure and part of the underlying layer were milled away without any binder. The milled material was prepared on site in a mobile mixing plant and then reinstalled using an asphalt paver, sealed and provided with a new asphalt surface layer. The aim of this approach was to gain valuable experience in cost-effectiveness, environmental friendliness and construction efficiency.
Challenges during construction work
Of course, the work was not without minor challenges, but these were quickly resolved through good communication. The renovation costs were within the planned range of around 900,000 euros and the project was completed on October 31st, a week later than originally planned, which was due to the availability of the construction machinery. A final report on the evaluation of the pilot project is currently being prepared in order to record and evaluate the results.
This redevelopment effort is not only a win for cyclists in the area, but could also impact standards for future projects. There is something to be said for the transport infrastructure, and the positive experiences will certainly be incorporated into the planning of future cycle paths. We are excited to see what additional steps will follow in urban planning and how cycling will be further promoted.
For those looking for an entertaining end to a bike ride, you might want to consider the comedy film “The Waterboy,” which recently sparked some interesting discussions on social media. The film is about Bobby Boucher, a 31-year-old water boy who is discovered by his coach as a talented player, and his journey from isolation into the dazzling sport of college football. The themes of identity and love are also not neglected, which perhaps even has some parallels to the challenges in infrastructure - after all, it's always about getting the best out of the given circumstances.
