Topping-out ceremony in Perleberg: New fire station as a security guarantee for the city!
A significant step in the city's history was recently celebrated in Perleberg. The topping-out ceremony for the new fire station on Quitzower Straße took place on July 11, 2025, a project that, with an estimated cost of 12 million euros, is the city's largest new construction project. The celebration announced the official completion of the shell construction and the citizens and firefighters in attendance were enthusiastic about the progress. Mayor Axel Schmidt did not miss the opportunity to express his pride in the work done and emphasized that the construction project sends an important signal for an efficient infrastructure. Ultimately, says Schmidt, the fire department must be able to help quickly and efficiently in an emergency.
The old fire station on Feldstrasse no longer met safety standards. Low gates that even modern fire engines could not accommodate, a lack of separate changing rooms and an extraction system for vehicle exhaust fumes were deficiencies that, according to the fire department, had been on the agenda for a long time. The accident fund had already determined in 2020 that the guard no longer met the required conditions. Therefore the new building was long overdue. Deputy Mayor Hagen Boddin spoke of possible borrowing to cover the costs, while volunteers looked for funding - although initially without success. A ray of hope finally came from the Brandenburg Ministry of the Interior, which promised funding of 1 million euros for the project.
A home for the fire department
With the new station, the Perleberg fire department will not only be modernized, but will also receive significantly improved conditions. Ten parking spaces are planned for the emergency vehicles as well as training areas and a training tower. The new fire station will also be located more centrally at the old fairground, so that the fire brigade can be deployed more quickly to the surrounding areas. During the topping-out ceremony, city fire chief Maik Müller described the building as an architectural highlight and a symbol of determination and security in the community. Together with local fire chief David Roß, he led the guests through the new building, and visitors also expressed consistently positive feedback.
The new fire department building is a testament to the tireless work of the local firefighters. With currently 54 active firefighters, it is clear how great the need for a modern station is. Over 100 missions have already been carried out this year, and the Perleberg fire department even has the only drone unit in the entire Prignitz. The new station will support this important work and ensure that the fire department can continue to act quickly and effectively.
Funding and support
The financing concept for the new building stipulates that the city provides its own share of at least 40 percent of the total eligible expenditure, while the grant from the municipal infrastructure program can make up up to 60 percent. This funding is open to all local fire protection providers as long as they have not received any other funding for the same purpose. It is a significant step in the right direction and shows that the village community is ready to invest in the future of fire protection.
Overall, the new fire station is not only a structural necessity, but also a strong sign of appreciation and support for the fire service work in Perleberg. “There is something going on,” you think to yourself and it will be interesting to see how the project will develop in the coming years.
