Rostock celebrates top spot: quality of life and progress in Elmenhorst!
The city of Rostock performed impressively in a comprehensive resident survey, the so-called Heimatcheck. Loud Northern Courier Rostock takes first place compared to other regions in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, such as Uckermark and Prignitz. Residents gave numerous positive reviews on various areas of life.
Particularly noteworthy are the results in the categories of cleanliness and quality of life. Here Rostock was able to shine with 7.23 points in cleanliness, while it achieved second place in quality of life with 7.00 points, which is above the regional average of 6.95 points. Further points were achieved in the areas of family & children (6.36), network coverage (6.32) and sports & clubs (6.16). However, there are also some challenges, especially in the area of healthcare, where only 5.22 points were achieved.
Elmenhorst/Lichtenhagen stands out
In the Rostock district, the community of Elmenhorst/Lichtenhagen particularly stands out. This achieved above-average ratings in almost all categories, including an excellent score of 8.39 for retail and 7.84 in health care, which makes it the top performer in the district. The quality of life is also high at 7.96 points, which underlines the attractive standard of living in the community.
As Mayor Uwe Barten emphasizes, the bypass, which opened in July 2025, plays a crucial role in the quality of life and progress in Elmenhorst/Lichtenhagen. The construction, which took three years and cost a total of 21 million euros, has drastically reduced through traffic - from the original up to 14,000 vehicles to around 1,000 per day. This development was announced during the summer festival by State Secretary Ines Jesse.
On the way to modern education
Another forward-looking project is the planned educational campus, which is to be built on a five-hectare area between Elmenhorst and Lichtenhagen. A daycare center, an after-school care center, a primary school as well as a sports hall and a sports field are planned here. The design planning has already been completed, now those responsible are just waiting for the funding from the state. Construction is scheduled to start in 2027, which increases anticipation for further developments in the community.
Village life in Elmenhorst/Lichtenhagen is also enriched by the dedicated sports club LSG Elmenhorst with its 550 members, which is primarily concerned with promoting youth. With a coastline of 840 meters and the distinction as a “recognized tourist resort”, the community offers not only its residents but also visitors a high quality of life and a wide range of leisure opportunities.
A total of 16,664 participants in the home check, including 31 from Elmenhorst/Lichtenhagen, cast their votes, which provides a broad basis for the results. The ratings reflect a high level of satisfaction with the immediate living environment - a win for everyone involved.
The new bypass, which has been open to traffic since July 21, 2025, has finally been implemented after many challenges. Remaining work such as the construction of a bus stop and the creation of small bodies of water are currently still underway, much to the delight of the community and its residents, who can notice a clear improvement in traffic conditions. The plants and trees planned for 2026 will certainly further enhance the overall appearance of the area, explains the road construction official in charge Strassen MV.
