Skoda rolls over in Western Pomerania: driver under the influence of alcohol!

On August 11, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred on the B199 in Görke, which raises several questions about road safety. A 46-year-old Skoda driver was traveling from Postlow towards Anklam around 4:30 p.m. when his vehicle left the road for unknown reasons and collided with a street tree. The impact was so severe that the car rolled over and finally came to a stop on the road Northern Courier reported.

Fortunately, the driver was able to free himself. However, he suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital in Anklam for examination. When the accident occurred, the police smelled alcohol; a test carried out showed a value of 0.7 per mille. This prompted the officers to file a report for endangering road traffic. The man's driver's license was also confiscated. The material damage amounts to around 50,000 euros. The B199 remained completely closed for two hours while the accident was being investigated.

Drunk driving – an underestimated danger

The incident has given rise to discussion about the dangers of drinking alcohol while driving. DVR points out that the risk of accidents increases significantly even at low alcohol levels: at 0.3 per mille the risk doubles, at 0.8 per mille it increases 4.5 times. What is particularly alarming is that, according to a survey, one in 16 traffic deaths was due to an alcohol-related accident. These statistics are a strong call to take the issue seriously.

Despite the facts, many see the consumption of alcohol in conjunction with driving as a trivial offense. In Germany, there has been a zero alcohol limit for novice drivers and those under 21 since 2007. Violating this rule can result in severe fines and points in the traffic offenders' register. In this age group, a fine of at least 250 euros and a point in the driving fitness register can be expected, but drivers over 21 should also act carefully, as performance losses can occur from just 0.3 per mille.

Increase public awareness

Encouragingly, 90% of respondents in Europe are aware of the dangers of drinking behind the wheel, with 31% saying they have driven under the influence in the last 12 months. This clearly shows that, despite the education provided through initiatives such as [Know your limit](https://www.kenn-dein-limit.de/ Alcohol consumption/numbers-and-graphics/trafficunfaelle-unter-ethanolinfluence/) and the high level of awareness, a considerable part of the population still underestimates the risks.

In summary, it can be said: Every road user should take their own responsibility seriously. The consequences of drunk driving are potentially devastating not only for the driver involved, but also for other people on the road. Regulations and guidelines alone cannot change the situation. A change in awareness is needed to avoid accidents like the one in Görke.
