Renaissance of the Plauer Bridge: Citizens donate for historical splendor!

In Brandenburg an der Havel there is a lot going on around the old Plauer Bridge. With the aim of restoring the historic Art Nouveau railing, various actors have started a joint project that requires both citizen commitment and financial support. MWM Metalltechnik Westmünsterland GmbH has already started the detailed planning for the new bridge superstructure. Construction on the Brandenburg side is scheduled to start at the end of September 2025, as stadt-brandenburg.de reports.

The planned assembly of the seven renovated railing parts will be carried out by Metallbau Windeck GmbH from October 2025. This work was only made possible through the extensive support of the Independent Citizens' Association Plaue e.V. Both the state and the city have made funding commitments, along with significant private donations and grants from the VR Foundation. Each segment of the historic railing costs around 8,000 euros, so collecting funds for the renovation is a high priority.

An important step for the bridge

After three more restored parts of the Art Nouveau railing were returned to the old Plauer Bridge at the beginning of 2024, the entrepreneurs Oliver Windeck and Lutz Sperling worked on this project with great commitment. A device specifically made for assembly was created, and the first test run was promising. The railings are an essential part of the bridge and are very popular with the citizens of Plaue and the surrounding area.

On Monday, May 27, 2024, a public assembly will take place on the south side of the bridge from 8:00 a.m. to which all sponsors, helpers and interested citizens are cordially invited. The work can be easily observed from there, and there will also be an information and barbecue stand available for refreshment. The commitment of many citizens is particularly evident in the carrying out of scrap collections in Plaue, Kirchmöser, Wusterwitz and Bensdorf, which help to finance the restoration work.

Support for the future

The city of Brandenburg an der Havel has already provided 3 million euros for the renovation of the structure of the old Plauer Bridge; A further 1 million euros will be added for the sidewalk and roadway, 75% of which will be financed by the federal government and the state of Brandenburg. However, in order to fully recover the historic railing, additional donations are necessary, which will primarily be used for the restoration of the remaining segments. For this purpose, a donation account is maintained at the Mittelbrandenburgische Sparkasse in Potsdam.

Anyone interested in contributing to the preservation of this monument can access the donation account:

As denkmalsschutz.de recently reported, the German Foundation for Monument Protection supports numerous renovation projects in Germany every year, including this one. The remaining projects were selected by a volunteer commission of monument experts to carefully support the diverse monuments, including bridges, churches, castles and historic gardens.

The return of the Art Nouveau railing not only has historical significance, but also promotes community spirit in the region. And the gastronomic delicacies at the grill stand will certainly attract one or two citizens to the bridge. In doing so, the city is sending a strong signal for the preservation of its cultural treasures.
