New campus in Potsdam: scale for science and digital future!
Potsdam, Deutschland - On July 10, 2025, the Task Force officially started its work for the construction of a new campus at the University of Potsdam (UP) and the expansion of the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI). In a constructive start, which in the State Chancellery under the direction of Prime Minister Dr. Dietmar Woidke and Professor Hasso Plattner took place, the first preliminary talks started in the working groups "Planning and Building" and "Teaching and Research Cooperation". Woidke left no doubt that it is the goal of realizing the project by 2035 at the latest - for Potsdam and Brandenburg to establish itself as a location -determining science region.
The focus is particularly on the new campus on the Brauhausberg and the modernization of the university locations in Golm and on the new palace. These steps should not only set new standards at the locations, but also increase the region's international competitiveness. On the part of the country, the UP and Hasso Plattner Foundation, a Letter of Intent was signed at the beginning of June, which laid the foundation for this cooperation.cooperation and digital engineering
The Task Force has the task of coordinating and promoting the project, supported by representatives of the state government at Ministerial level such as Interior Minister René Wilke and Science Minister Dr. Manja Schüle. Finance Minister Robert Crumbach and Mayor Burkhard Exner von Potsdam are also part of the team. A central goal of this initiative is the expansion of the HPI and the establishment of a joint digital engineering faculty with the UP, which should contribute to the digital sovereignty of Germany and Europe.
The Digital Engineering Faculty, which Hasso Plattner announced in June 2016 and founded on April 1, 2017, was the first fully privately financed faculty of a public university in Germany. Their goal is to promote interdisciplinary cooperation and the training of specialists in the field of digital engineering, as explained on the website of the Hasso Plattner Institute here .
international perspectives
Another important dimension of this initiative is to strengthen international university cooperations. German universities, including the UP and the HPI, have started to develop transnational educational opportunities increasingly and thus promote internationalization. The code for German university projects abroad, which was adopted in 2013, determines clear academic and ethical minimum requirements. Universities that voluntarily join this code are shown as a quality-conscious and intercultural sensitive partner, which contributes immensely to scientific networking , according to the information on the international university cooperation .
Overall, it can be said that the formation of the task force and the associated projects made a strong sign for the future of the science landscape in Potsdam. The close cooperation between the HPI and the University of Potsdam stands not only for innovative teaching and learning concepts, but also for the will to interfere internationally in research and technology.
