Shocking drug checks on the highway: police take stock!
Road safety is not an issue that should be taken lightly. Today, on June 17, 2025, the South and Southeast Hesse police departments set an example in a large-scale operation on the motorway and in the cities. Numerous officials, including from other federal states, the federal police and customs, worked together on this control operation around the “Drugs in Road Traffic” day of action to increase road safety.
The controls on the A15 are no coincidence; they are part of a strategic approach to combat alcohol and drug driving. By 12:30 p.m., 821 vehicles had already been checked. The aim was to slow down traffic and direct cars into one lane. The results were alarming: 12 drivers were under the influence of intoxicants and four road users did not have a valid driving license. Two vehicles that were being sought were also seized. A truck driver required medical attention during the inspection, underlining the seriousness of the situation. Thank God a rescue helicopter wasn't necessary because the paramedics gave the all-clear.
Focus on drugs in traffic
It often seems to me as if not enough attention is paid to the general risks on the road. The Berlin police also carried out a similar action, which was marked by the 5th Berlin DiS Days. Increased traffic controls were carried out here from September 17th to 19th, 2024 to point out the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Over 70 emergency services helped out during the operation and checked a total of 812 vehicles.
The results in Berlin were particularly worrying: 43 drivers had consumed drugs and 4 were driving under the influence of alcohol. This led to numerous proceedings, including 26 cases of driving without a license and 125 administrative offenses. Here, too, education played a central role and officials offered preventative discussions.
Uniform approach to improve road safety
In a similar sense, controls also took place in the Southeast Hesse region. From 3:30 p.m. the police were also able to record successes here. In the cities of Langen, Langenselbold and Hammersbach, 9 violations related to drugs and alcohol were identified. Here, too, there were proceedings for driving without a valid driver's license. The police relied on preventive discussions and showed that education about the risks in road traffic remains a central concern.
No matter where you are, combating the dangers of alcohol and drugs is and remains an important issue. Over 50% of traffic accidents with injuries can be attributed to this influence. Last year, the South Police Department alone registered 17,345 traffic accidents in which 30 people lost their lives. There really is something there.
The police measures are an important step towards increasing road safety. Every check and every conversation not only raises awareness among road users, but also uncovers potential sources of danger. It remains to be hoped that such actions will continue to take place regularly in the future to make the streets safer.
