Heavy rain warning for Berlin and Brandenburg: Be careful of flooding!

Today, July 21, 2025, brings us wet weather and lots of warnings in Berlin and Brandenburg. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), heavy rain is expected in the coming hours. The official warning from the DWD applies from Monday evening to Tuesday morning and could have serious consequences in numerous regions. Drivers in particular should be particularly careful, as the forecast amounts of rain can not only flood roads, but also cause landslides and aquaplaning. According to rbb24, up to 70 liters of rain per square meter are possible in the next 12 hours.

Berlin and the surrounding areas, including Lower Lusatia and Uckermark, are severely affected. Here we expect rainfall amounts of between 30 and 40 liters per square meter in the next few hours, while in western Brandenburg even 20 to 35 liters could fall in just 6 hours. This unstable weather is the result of an air mass boundary where warm, moist air from Eastern Europe meets cooler, temperate air from Western Europe, according to the DWD. From the afternoon onwards, thunderstorms are expected from the southwest and west, which can be accompanied by heavy rain and stormy gusts (DWD).

Severe weather warnings in detail

The forecasts paint a clear picture: thunderstorms could reach the middle of the country by the evening before rain activity subsides overnight. But the weather situation remains unstable. Further showers and thunderstorms are expected for Tuesday, especially in the northern half, with rainfall amounts again able to reach up to 20 liters per square meter in a short period of time. The storm will not be missed either: gusts with speeds of up to 80 km/h are possible. These warnings are divided into different danger levels, ranging from simple weather warnings for gusts of wind to extreme weather warnings, also explained by NDR.

The summer months have already brought above-average rainfall, which has partly led to a balanced rainfall deficit. The following days promise changeable weather with showers and local thunderstorms, but without any acute risk of severe weather. The rain will move northeast towards the Baltic Sea in the next few days, and the weather conditions no longer offer any major surprises.

In view of all these weather warnings, it is advisable to pay particular attention to traffic and, if necessary, reconsider any planned journeys. If you want to be safe on the roads, you should take these weather warnings seriously and take appropriate precautions. Hamburg and other northern German cities are facing an exciting but also challenging weather weekend (NDR).
