Bavaria Innovative: 300th immigration authority starts digital stay!

The digital revolution has finally reached the administration! On Monday, August 16, 2025, the immigration office of the Amberg-Sulzbach district in Bavaria celebrated its entry into the digital age. It is the 300th authority in Germany to use the online service “Aufenthalt Digital”. City report reported. This service, which was originally developed in Brandenburg, includes ten different online offers that make it easier for citizens to apply for residence permits and other residence-related benefits.

Interior State Secretary Dr. At the official launch in Potsdam, Johannes Wagner informed that more than half of all immigration authorities in Germany now rely on “Digital Residence”. This step not only brings a breath of fresh air into administrative processes, but also significantly relieves the burden on municipalities and increases the efficiency of working methods. With multilingual options and the possibility of integrating application data directly into specialist software, a new step towards more citizen-friendly administration is being taken.

The advantages of the online service

Important functions of the online service include the “residence permit for gainful employment” and the “accelerated skilled worker procedure”. These applications are already integrated into 300 immigration authorities. In the Dahme-Spreewald district in Brandenburg, for example, the system is used intensively for the skilled worker process. In total, there are more than 500 immigration authorities in Germany, 150 of which are in the rollout phase for the new online service. The Brandenburg Ministry of the Interior and Municipal Affairs (MIK) has taken responsibility for the implementation of the Online Access Act in these institutions since 2018.

A special highlight of the “Digital Stay” is the special return channel for requesting information and documents after receipt of the application. This means that residence law matters can now be settled conveniently and easily online. The Online Access Act (OZG) makes it possible for citizens and businesses to clarify administrative issues from home.

Digital navigation in Cologne

But it's not just the administrative world that's going digital, navigating the city is also becoming smarter. Another example of a successful digital service is the online mapping service Driving Directions. This offer allows you to plan the best routes quickly and easily, whether you are traveling by car, bike or on foot. With features like real-time traffic updates and the ability to add multiple stops, every city stroller becomes a route pro. So anyone traveling in Cologne, whether on the way to work or on a trip, can access the variety of services that the digital age brings us.

The evolution from paper maps to digital navigation systems has changed the way we get around for years. Originally launched with the introduction of MapQuest in 1996 and Google Maps in 2005, the technology has evolved rapidly since then.

Overall, it shows that digitalization is not only shaping the public sector, but also individual mobility. As we embark on new, digital paths, we can only hope that it will be a win-win for everyone involved.
