Großbeeren wins CITY CYCLING: 357,000 km and 59 tons of CO2 saved!
On September 20, 2025, a worthy conclusion to this year's CITY CYCLING campaign took place in the Teltow-Fläming district. The most successful participants were honored at a festive event as part of the meeting day in Ludwigsfelde. Above all, the municipality of Großbeeren, which was recognized as the most bicycle-active municipality. Not only was the sense of community recognized, but also the commitment of each individual, which was visible in the active cyclists and their teams. District Administrator Kornelia Wehlan and Alderman Dietlind Biesterfeld were on site and highlighted the impressive achievements of the participants.
A total of 1,811 people in 147 teams took part in the CITY CYCLING campaign. The result is impressive: together the participants cycled an impressive 357,089 kilometers. This corresponds to around nine orbits of the earth and leads to the avoidance of around 59 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. A remarkable step forward in terms of environmental goals, especially considering that many of these trips involved short distances that could easily be covered by bicycle. This shows that the bicycle is not only an environmentally friendly means of transport, but also a fast one, especially for distances of less than 5 kilometers.
A look behind the numbers
The success of this year's city cycling is even more remarkable when you look at the figures from the previous year: in 2024 there were 1,600 cyclists with 318,000 kilometers and 53 tons of CO2 emissions avoided. The Teltow-Fläming district is therefore taking a clear course towards sustainable mobility and shows that cycling is not only healthy, but also beneficial for the community.
The newly participating community of Jüterbog was particularly active, covering more than 38,800 kilometers with 248 cyclists and 18 teams. It shows that the trend towards using bicycles is also gaining traction in newer communities. The earnings of Großbeeren are impressive, with 4.33 kilometers cycled per resident, while Blankenfelde-Mahlow followed with 3.71 kilometers and Jüterbog with 2.99 kilometers.
The application figures underline the great importance of bicycles today. Experts even estimate that in many cities up to 30% of car trips could be shifted to cycling. Solutions to promote cycling are important not only for the environment, but also for the economy. Cycling can increase life expectancy and helps reduce air pollutants. In addition, the cost of using a bicycle is significantly cheaper. These are around 10 cents per kilometer, while the costs for cars can be between 21 and 218 cents per kilometer. This makes it clear that cycling is not just a lifestyle trend, but also a cost-effective and environmentally friendly mobility alternative in everyday life.
On to the next round
With the end of the campaign, the Teltow-Fläming district is already looking to the future: the next CITY CYCLING round is on the program for 2026. It remains to be seen how many people will take up cycling in the coming season. What is clear, however, is that the fun of cycling and the contribution to climate protection will continue to be very popular in the coming years.
In summary, the CITY CYCLING campaign 2025 impressively shows the positive effects that cycling has on our cities, the environment and the health of the population. When it comes to cycling, the opportunities are endless and in Teltow-Fläming, with great enthusiasm and commitment, they have impressively demonstrated that the path to the future is much more enjoyable on two wheels.
