Teltow-Fläming District Council: Important decisions on education and refugees

On June 23, 2025, the Teltow-Fläming district council made some important decisions that could affect large parts of the population in a meeting that lasted around an hour and a half. The central topics included school meals, fees for music schools and support for refugees. Maz Online reported that some important decisions were made in this context.

The newly elected head of the Office for Education and Culture, Evgeniya Gärtner, prevailed against 40 competitors in a selection process. Gärtner, who is currently acting mayor of Großbeeren, will now lead the educational landscape of the district. Another hot topic was the planned price increases for school meals at high schools and special schools. One proposal was to increase the cost from the current 2.20 euros to 4 euros per portion. But this decision was postponed because there was disagreement between the district council members.

Developments in the music school situation

In order to promote language culture, it was decided to increase the fees for music schools by 20 percent. The reasons for this were seen in the increased costs for the district. This could place additional financial pressure on many families, but according to those responsible, it is necessary to maintain quality standards.

Another concern of the meeting was the technical situation in the Luckenwalde district building. There is an urgent need for action here: an outdated data network and an alarm system that is too quiet do not currently make working in the district hall any easier. An estimated 6.3 million euros will be spent on correcting these grievances. Concerns about the ability to easily locate emergencies and the basic efficiency of everyday work do not seem unjustified.

Commitment to the region and social issues

The members of the district council agreed on another point: preserving the Notte Canal is important for the tourist development of the region. That's why the district joined the “Notte Natural Area Alliance” to take action against the Environment Ministry's plans to de-designate the canal.

A motion from the SPD and the Greens called for further discussions with the health insurance companies and the legislature in the area of emergency services. The main aim here is to improve the reimbursement of costs for all operations, which should also contribute to strengthening the medical on-call service. The AfD wanted to oblige asylum seekers to do community service work worth 0.80 euros per hour. However, this request was rejected as many members expressed concerns about bureaucratic hurdles.

Numerous other resolutions were also made at the meeting, many of which concern development within the district. For example, decisions were made about the further development of the Luckenwalde biotechnology park and adjustments to various fee regulations. Creating and maintaining the quality of life in cities and communities was also on the agenda. Further details can be found here.

The meeting made it clear that the Teltow-Fläming district council has a lot of work to do given the multitude of topics and challenges. It remains to be seen whether citizens can actually benefit from the measures adopted.
