Tragic crash: Two men die in a plane accident in Brandenburg

A tragic accident shook Brandenburg: On August 30, 2025, a motor glider crashed in the municipality of Niederer Fläming, where two men, aged 62 and 66, lost their lives. This accident took place near the Reinsdorf airfield, which is about 75 kilometers south of Berlin and is suitable for both gliders and powered aircraft. The plane fell into a corn field shortly after takeoff, which presented the emergency services with a difficult situation.

The police confirmed the deaths of both occupants, who were members of the Aero Club Berlin. There is so far little information about the exact circumstances of the accident, as investigations are ongoing by the police and the Federal Office for Aircraft Accident Investigation. Mercury reports that a rescue helicopter from Saxony-Anhalt and a Bundeswehr helicopter were also deployed at the scene of the accident.

On-site operations

The extent of the accident required a large number of fire and rescue services. The emergency services were busy with intensive rescue measures as well as having the destroyed aircraft transported away. A wheel loader took care of the wreckage, which was recovered by emergency services on the evening of the incident. RBB24 reports additionally that the exact advisability under the circumstances of the crash needs to be determined in order to avoid such tragedies in the future.

Aviation accidents occur with varying frequencies. According to a current analysis, most plane crashes occur in the USA, while the accident rate in commercial aviation is far lower than that in driving. Despite a decline in the number and severity of these incidents (268 deaths worldwide in 2024), concerns about air travel safety remain current. Statista has comprehensive data here compiled.

While the investigation continues, the community in Brandenburg remains shocked by the loss. There is great sympathy, not only among the relatives of the deceased, but also among the members of the Aero Club who have to stand together in difficult times. A good hand in getting things done and a quick clarification of the circumstances are desirable so that safety in aviation can be continuously improved.
