Tragic cycling accident near Luckenwalde: demands for a safe cycle path are increasing!
A tragic incident shook the region after a cyclist died in an accident on the L80 near Luckenwalde around a week ago. The incident occurred on July 2 at around 9:30 a.m. when a 60-year-old driver tried to overtake the cyclist. Unfortunately, for reasons that are still unclear, the cyclist veered towards the middle of the road, which led to the collision. Michael Schulze, a committed representative of the School Cycle Paths Association, has repeatedly pointed out the need for a cycle path on the dangerous L80 for years, especially in the section between Frankenfelde and the towns of Frankenförde and Zülichendorf. Mayor Stefan Scheddin was deeply affected and expressed his sympathy for the relatives of the deceased, while at the same time drawing attention to the extremely dangerous nature of the road for cyclists. The state road department is responsible for the construction of a cycle path, but planning has not yet progressed due to a lack of capacity. However, the section is classified as an “urgent need” and the next bicycle demonstration to demand the construction of the cycle path is planned for July 19, 2025. The association also announced further actions to promote the cycle path.
A study by insurers' accident research (UDV) takes a look at the general dangers for cyclists and points to the alarming situation on country roads. In 2023, 189 cyclists were killed and 2,996 seriously injured on German country roads. These numbers are particularly worrying, the UDV notes, as they account for approximately 42 percent of all cyclist fatalities and 21 percent of all seriously injured cyclists. Over the past decade, the number of bicycle accidents on rural roads has increased by nearly 30 percent and has remained stagnant since 2018, except for declines during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, 42 percent of fatal cycling accidents occur outside of urban areas, with many cyclists being overlooked by cars. It is also striking that in 59 percent of cases, drivers are the main cause of the accidents, often due to poor visibility, such as. B. at dusk or when it is wet.
Recommendations to improve security
The UDV has pointed out that many accidents occur due to a lack of safety measures or structural deficiencies. These include, among other things, junctions where the danger is particularly high. The demand for the creation of safe crossing options for cyclists and the removal of visual obstructions is obvious. Reducing the maximum permissible speed at intersections with poor visibility could also improve safety. A one-sided cycle path could bring decisive improvements here.
The situation for cyclists is undoubtedly worrying. This applies not only to Luckenwalde, but to many regions in Germany, as current statistics show. Despite various efforts to improve road safety, the number of fatal accidents involving cyclists has increased in recent years. So while the decline in the overall number of road deaths is encouraging, safety for cyclists remains a serious challenge. It is up to all of us to draw attention to these grievances and campaign for greater safety on the roads.
