30 years after the renovation: Templin's majestic church tower in focus!
With an exciting contribution, the new episode of the “Historical Guckkasten” focused attention on the impressive Mary Magdalene Church in Templin. The 70 meter high tower, which is a symbol of home for many Templin residents, was extensively renovated in the 1990s. An archive photo from 1995 showing the tower's weather vane not only brings back memories, but also tells of the meticulous restoration work that was completed at that time. Northern Courier reports that work on the wooden roof structure of the spire was the beginning of this renovation.
The new covering of the roof with copper sheeting, inspired by historical models, is just as impressive as the new lime mortar plaster and the mineral paint for the brick tower shaft. Another highlight of the renovation was the renewal of the cornices and stucco elements as well as the restoration of the sandstone balustrade. Blacksmith Wilfried Schwuchow was responsible for the impressive renovation and gilding of the 4.50 meter high tower ornament. The craftsmen also found documents and coins from 1878, which were placed back into the tower's sphere after the restoration.
A special anniversary
The year 1995 was also a very special one for Templin, as the city celebrated its 725th anniversary. Large celebrations took place from September 29th to October 1st. For this occasion, a silver coin was minted that showed the city's coat of arms and the old seal of the Templin citizenship from 1618. The silver coin was available for 40 D-Marks, while the gold unit cost 700 D-Marks. In a survey about the history of the church, some participants were able to demonstrate their knowledge of the tower in the peep show. Joachim Krämer and Ingrid Fritz knew how to answer the correct puzzle question, while Klaus Preuß from Milmersdorf initially had difficulties and guessed a different tower.
Doreen Stein, a former Templiner, who remembers her childhood near the church, is also a special testimony to the connection to the city. Other participants who were able to shine with their knowledge were Ilse Krüger, Klaus Behm, Claudia Schröder, Manfred Paesler and Siegfried Adolph, who also come from Templin.
The importance of monument preservation
The care of such historic buildings is of immense importance for our culture and identity. Another example of committed monument preservation can be found on Joseph Kessler, where the importance of restoring and preserving historical buildings is emphasized. Only with a good hand for such projects can we ensure that history remains alive for future generations and that precious witnesses of the past can continue to be viewed.
Without the valuable memories of places like the tower of Mary Magdalene Church, the connection to one's own history could quickly be lost. Our thanks therefore go to all those who dedicate themselves to preserving such masterpieces and preserving them for posterity.
