Architecture with a future: Opening of the BDA Prize in Prenzlau!

On June 21st at 4 p.m. a very special place of inspiration will open in the St. Nikolaikirche Prenzlau. The exhibition “BDA Prize Brandenburg 2024”, organized by the Association of German Architects (BDA), presents the best architectural achievements in the state. With a special highlight in its luggage: the award-winning Feldsteinhaus in the Uckermark, a former stable that has been fascinatingly transformed into a modern residential building. The well-known conversion uses regional materials such as clay, wood and brick and is perfect for the surrounding landscape, where nature has already reclaimed itself.

The exhibition presents a total of ten selected construction projects, all of which have a strong focus on ecological building and social responsibility. The aim is to highlight the importance of regional building culture within rural contexts. Free entry attracts interested parties not only from the Uckermark, but also from neighboring regions.

The fieldstone house in detail

The Feldsteinhaus, located in a sparsely populated area of the Uckermark, tells an impressive story. Originally used as a stable on a four-sided farm, the building is an example of sustainable construction that combines old building traditions with contemporary architecture. The original character of the building is preserved thanks to the preserved outer walls made of red brick. New openings provide light and views of nature and give the house a skeletal appearance. The interiors are cleverly designed: a central concrete volume on the ground floor ensures stability and houses the bathroom, while on the upper floor there are two bedrooms and an open gallery.

This construction project is not only an architectural beacon, but also a symbol of the revitalization of rural areas. The historic courtyard paving was uncovered again, creating a bridge between the past and the present. Across the region, similar projects are causing more and more interest in sustainable construction.

A network for building culture

The topic of sustainable building is very popular in South Westphalia. Here, the city of Arnsberg works together with a network to promote regional building and craft culture. This also includes the “House for Building Culture” competence center, which increasingly focuses on the importance of traditional and modern construction methods. The aim is not only to improve the built environment, but also to strengthen regional identity through the use of local materials.

As part of REGIONALE 2025, the “Building with Wood” project will be prominently represented and aims to increase the use of wood in the construction industry. This commitment reflects the trend to focus on environmentally friendly and regional practices - in keeping with the spirit of the premiere exhibition in Prenzlau.

Overall, the exhibition “BDA Prize Brandenburg 2024” impressively shows how architectural quality and ecological awareness can be reconciled. The Feldsteinhaus in the Uckermark is representative of this development and it is not for nothing that it attracts attention.

Anyone interested in architecture and building culture should mark this date in their calendar. Don't miss the opportunity to experience high-quality architecture in one of the region's most beautiful historical settings when the doors of St. Nicholas Church are thrown wide open on June 21st!
