Mayoral candidates in dialogue: Visions for Prenzlau 2025

A vivid picture of the political landscape in Prenzlau was recently shown in the Güstow community center. The first public candidate forum for the upcoming mayoral election took place on July 10, 2025, with around 80 citizens taking part. The event was organized by Felix Teichner (AfD), the parliamentary group leader in the city council. The whole thing was sponsored by the farm butcher's shop, and the drinks were provided by the local council. A good place to enter into a shared dialogue!

The two candidates Marek Wöller-Beez from the CDU and the non-party Eve Guske, a self-employed property manager and mother of five, sat on the podium. While Wöller-Beez referred to a long experience in administration and advocated “business as usual – but better”, Guske is striving for a new beginning with more vision, family friendliness and proximity to citizens. As far as the issues that concern people in Prenzlau go, these ranged from district budgets to the future of the indoor swimming pool to economic issues. Students will be excited to see what else comes up in the discussion.

Important topics and clear positions

The discussion about the condition of the Güstow fire pond, which Wolfgang Schulz criticized, received particular attention. Both candidates also spoke out against an initial reception facility for the Bundeswehr in the industrial area. While Guske does not rule out that the indoor pool could remain, Wöller-Beez favors swimming lessons at the Uckersee. Ideas for houseboats and gastronomy have also been floated at this location, indicating the region's tourism potential.

The atmosphere during the talk was impressively objective and respectful, which shows that politics in Prenzlau is lively and open to dialogue. Interested citizens have until July 24th to propose additional candidates for mayor.

The withdrawal of Hendrik Sommer

In the midst of this turbulent political time, Mayor Hendrik Sommer announced that he will not run again in the next election on September 28, 2025. Sommer has had a distinguished career in public service spanning nearly 36 years, including 16 years as mayor. He did not name any health or political reasons for his withdrawal. Instead, he describes his term in office as entirely positive and filled with joy. A real departure into a new era is imminent!

The 2025 mayoral election will be shaped not only by the current candidates, but also by the resignations and decisions made in recent years. In Germany, these elections are subject to state laws, which leads to different election regulations. Local and citizen-oriented, local elections are often less about party politics and more about the people and their ideas that citizens care about. An exciting time for everyone involved!
