On Thursday afternoon there was a large-scale fire service operation in Seelübbe, a district of Prenzlau. Alarms blared when overheating and therefore unclear smoke development was reported in an apartment building. The Prenzlau volunteer fire department, supported by the rescue service and the police, were at the scene within a few minutes.
The landlord of the house, Manfred Suhr, acted quickly and switched off the power supply via the main switch when he received evidence of smoke. His son had heard the tired sound of the smoke detectors in the neighboring apartment and then discovered thick smoke coming from the windows on both floors. Fortunately, the young family was not at home in the affected apartment; they were at work, in kindergarten and at school.
Intensive search for the cause
The fire department immediately began searching for the cause of the smoke using breathing apparatus and a thermal imaging camera. But despite their efforts, no visible smoldering fire could be found. An electrician was also called in to check the entire electrical system. However, a cause for the smoke development could not be determined. Manfred Suhr said that no fuse was blown during the incident, which makes the situation even more mysterious.
The apartment building in which the incident occurred was completely renovated between 1995 and 1996. During this comprehensive renovation, the electrical system was also replaced. This could indicate that this is not a typical problem in older buildings.
Smoke detectors as life savers
The situation in Seelübbe sheds light on the need for smoke detectors in residential buildings. These small devices can save lives in an emergency by giving residents early warning. While the incident ended lightly for many, it also provides an opportunity to reflect on safety within our own four walls.
