Violence in Gesundbrunnen: Union demands strict knife ban!

On Saturday evening there were violent violent clashes in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen, which were expected not only for those present, but also for the police. A 30-year-old was tragically killed by a stab injury in these incidents, while between 40 and 60 people participated in the action. The massive commitment of the police illustrated the threat situation, which apparently prevails in the neighborhood. In view of such incidents, the police union (GdP) calls for comprehensive consequences, including a general ban on knife in public space. Stephan Weh, the state chairman of the GdP, comments concerned about the distribution of knives among young men and as quickly as possible calls measures to contain violence.

Against the background of the recent violent incidents in Berlin, a new ban comes into force on Thursday, which prohibits the carrying of knives and other weapons in all Berlin S-Bahn, subways, buses and train stations. This was decided by the Berlin Senate and is due to the increasing knife cases that were registered last year 3,412. It is particularly alarming that about half of these incidents contained threats, which underlines the need for such a ban. The consequences required by the GDP thus seem to fall on fertile soil, because the interior senator Iris Spranger (SPD) emphasizes how important this ban is to combat violent crime.

Details on the new knife ban

The ban that came into force on July 17, 2025 is part of a comprehensive regulation that is intended to increase security in public transport. It includes all types of knives as well as shot, irritant and signal weapons. Exceptions only apply to certain professional groups, such as the police, fire brigade and gastronomy, which have to carry knives with them for professional reasons. However, newly purchased and packaged knives may continue to be carried in these means of transport.

The police are entitled to carry out suspicion -independent controls, and found, such as knives or pepper spray, is confiscated. Violations of the ban represent administrative offenses and can be punished with fines of up to 10,000 euros. Repeated violations can even result in the loss of driving license if there are doubts about the character suitability. So far, leading weapons and knives has only been inadmissible in certain Berlin parks, but the need to expand such regulations, since almost 100 knives have been ensured since the ban was introduced in Görlitzer Park.

The urgent goal of these measures is clear: a safe space for the citizens of Berlin, especially in public transport and train stations. The impending controls and the clarification of passengers about the new regulations will be communicated in the coming days to ensure that all users of the means of transport are informed about the restrictions.

Further information about the topic is continuously provided to achieve high sensitization among the population. So also for the political landscape there is a lot from the question of how to sustainably improve security in public space.
